The Department of Energy's Joint Genome Institute (DOE JGI) is a state-of-the-art sequencing center dedicated to advancing genomics research in support of the DOE missions related to clean energy generation and environmental characterization and cleanup. The DOE JGI is currently seeking a talented Software Developer to design, improve and support the information systems that manage institutional and laboratory operations at the Production Genomics Facility in Walnut Creek, CA. The selected candidate will be hired at the Software Developer 3 or 4 classification level depending upon the candidate's level of experience and qualifications. Position reports to the Production Informatics Group Lead. Specific Job Duties Essential - - Work as part of a team to address the needs of the production sequencing department. This involves a wide range of activities, primarily software development; but additionally, software quality assurance, modeling laboratory processes and interacting closely with scientific staff, supervisors and laboratory workers. - Integrate new system components with existing facilities and frameworks, following local and industry standard practices to minimize training and maintenance costs, ensuring that user interfaces exhibit good usability characteristics, with particular emphasis on ergonomics. - Perform relational database schema design and performance tuning applying industry practices. - Create and maintain database-backed web applications to track, control and review laboratory and institutional operations. - Train customers on the use of new and existing features, individually and in groups; create supporting materials for training presentations. - Provide responsive customer support, assisting users with the prompt resolution of data entry errors, software malfunctions and other system needs. - Mentor and cross-train other team members in software development and design. - Communicate regularly with customers and supervisory staff about plans, designs and progress. - Follow prescribed practices for software version control, testing and release engineering. Marginal - - Propose consolidation and replacement of legacy features with poor maintainability or usability characteristics demonstrating good judgment and initiative. - Provide recommendations to customers about potential process improvements or software enhancements that would enhance efficiency, productivity or safety. Required skills: Essential - - B.S. in Computer Science or a related scientific or technical field (or equivalent experience) and a minimum of five years related experience. - Working knowledge of Perl, SQL, Oracle PL/SQL and Javascript. - Demonstrated experience developing database-backed applications and experience with web development including: Apache, CGI programming, HTML, CSS, and AJAX. - In-depth understanding of principles and practices for effective use of relational databases particularly Oracle 10g. - Demonstrated success designing and implementing systems and software in a scientific or technical environment, e.g., University, National Laboratory, corporate R&D center or automated manufacturing facility. - Ability to effectively learn and apply new technology concepts to troubleshoot and solve problems and challenges of a diverse scope. - Effective interpersonal communication, public speaking, and presentation skills. - Effective time management, organization, and planning skills. - Talent for working well under short deadlines and handling multiple tasks simultaneously. - Ability to work effectively in a diverse team environment. Desired skills: Desired - - Working knowledge of UNIX operating systems. - Familiarity with Prototype, Yahoo User Interface Library, Scriptaculous or other common Javascript libraries. - Experience with SOAP and web services. - Understanding of Oracle mod_plsql, OC4J, and other Oracle application server technologies. - Working knowledge of the Python and Java programming languages. - Experience with bioinformatics and genomic science. - Understanding of basic statistics.
