Yep, I think Iwas right - downgrading from ExtUtils::CBuilder-0.22 (which 
failed its test suite, and should therefore have not been installed in the 
first place) to version 0.18 (which passes all of its tests) fixed that 
problem.

Sorry - I should have thought to check that out before sending my last post.
