True , but you can make some logical deductions and the most logical one
here is he has 2 machines , one is a backup for the other , and currently
one is down.

I suppose its possible they could be 2 NICs in the same machine and one has
coincidentaly had a hardware failure which somehow destroyed the disks or 
someone at the server farm pulled the network cable out of it , but I tend to 
follow Occams Razor.

As someone else said, perhaps he's had enough and can't be bothered to 
reinstall from scratch.
