Carlsbad math teacher arrested, faces child porn charges

A Carlsbad high school math teacher was behind bars Wednesday for
alleged possession of child sexual abuse material after an investigation
flagged purchases of the material on the internet, California Attorney
General Rob Bonta announced the same day. 

Special agents from the state Department of Justice searched electronic
devices under La Costa Canyon High School teacher Joseph Anthony
Zyburt's control that further indicated his possession and attempted
possession of the content, according to Bonta's office.

Later in the day, San Dieguito Unified High School District (SDUHSD)
officials announced they were informed about the investigation in
September and that Zyburt was placed on leave at that time. 

"When someone who is entrusted with the care of our youth is revealed to
be harboring child sexual abuse material, it is not only a crime, but
also a betrayal of trust," Bonta is quoted as saying, in part, in a news
release issued on Wednesday, adding that "Protecting the most vulnerable
among us is not just a responsibility of this office, it is a moral
obligation." 

The Carlsbad Police Department and the FBI's Regional Computer Forensics
Laboratory assisted in the arrest. Carlsbad Police Chief Christie
Calderwood said the arrest "highlights the importance of strong
interagency partnerships" in keeping communities safe. 

According to the San Dieguito Unified High School District (SDUHSD),
about 1,650 students attend LCCHS, which is an International
Baccalaureate school. Students from the surrounding communities of
Cardiff, Encinitas, Leucadia, Olivenhain, and south Carlsbad are
enrolled at the campus. 

Zyburt, 55, also worked at MiraCosta College in Oceanside, which has him
listed as a Calculus and Analytic Geometry II in the math department
last summer. 

The California DOJ's Special Prosecutions Section was handling the case.
