Consider this:  they must hate the idea that even illegal immigrants are
desperate to reach Dear Old Blighty rather than stay in La Belle France.

OTOH, from the French POV, if the illegals just bugger off, that's one
less problem they have to deal with.  The Froggies are not well known
for being hospitable to foreigners.
