The optic nerves are the bundles which connect the light sensors and the 
processors. Some of the processing happens in the retina, some more 
happens in the bundle but most happens in various bits of the brain. To 
draw a computer analogy the "optic nerves" have smart routers at each 
end, and a combiner in the middle.

The bit of your brain that tells you that it is a ball which may be 
heading your way is nowhere near the bit that tells you where you need 
to put your hand to catch it or whether you need to dodge.

If you think our system is complex, the octopus has one which makes ours 
look positively rudimentary.
