The Chicago man whose wife was found dead in the stairwell of his South
Loop condo building was sentenced to jail Monday in a separate domestic
violence case.

Adam Beckerink was sentenced to 93 days in jail in a Michigan courtroom
after pleading no contest to domestic violence charges stemming from a
pair of incidents at the home of his estranged wife Caitlin Tracey. He was
also sentenced to two years probation in the case, according to a Berrien
County judge.

Tracey’s family reacted to that sentencing after the court hearing.

“We witnessed the constant fear in our daughter,” her mother Dr. Monica
Tracey said. “For over a year, we tried everything we could do to save her
from him.”

Beckerink pleaded no contest to the domestic violence charges stemming
from a pair of incidents at Tracey’s home in Michigan last year.

He has not been charged in connection to Tracey’s death, which occurred on
October 27, 2024 at a condo complex in the 1200 block of Prairie Street in
Chicago.

According to court documents, Tracey fell down 24 flights of stairs,
severing her foot, in the stairwell of that building.

Her death remains under investigation according to the Cook County Medical
Examiner’s Office, and no charges have been filed, according to Chicago
police.

Details from a police report, included in court filings after Tracey’s
parents were given custody of their daughter’s remains last year, indicate
that Beckerink was detained and questioned, but he was later released.

In court Monday, Beckerink delivered a statement after the sentencing.

“I did lose my wife and I haven't been able to grieve for her. I've been
trying to protect myself and fight. I miss my wife every day,” he said.

Tracey’s parents have been critical of the investigation into the death,
saying they still fear for the safety of their other daughter and their
grandson.

“We fear for our safety, the safety of our other daughter, our son-in-
law, and our young grandson,” Dr. Tracey said.
