Department of Health and Human Services Assistant Secretary Rachel Levine
is under fire after suggesting that hormone therapy can assist children
going through the "wrong puberty."

Levine, a biological male who identifies as female, made the comment after
being asked why children should not have to wait until they're 18 years
old before making life-altering decisions.

NEW YORK CITY PUSHES THE LIMITS OF GREEN POLICIES

"Adolescence is hard and puberty is hard," Levine told the crew of
Nightline for their Identity Denied: Trans in America series.

"What if you're going through the wrong puberty? What if you inside feel
that you are female, but now you're going through a male puberty?"

When pushed on the idea that minors are too young, Levine, whose birth
name is Richard, tried to suggest that nothing permanent is going on.

"I want to make it clear that, for prepubertal children, there are no
medical procedures done," Levine said. "The standard of care allows them
to explore that."

Levine's comments were met with criticism across social media.

"I was considered a tomboy during my adolescent years," one female Twitter
user commented.

"I was not interested in girl things, I would rather bike, fish, hike and
play music. I grew into my womanhood as the years passed. So glad no one
convinced me to take puberty blockers!"

"What if you transition all because of a 'feeling' and then that 'feeling'
goes away and you're stuck with a mutilated body and now face a life of
regret?" another tweet asked.

"Its true that puberty is difficult," according to one user

"[Which] means that the last thing children need is adults trying to talk
them into making life altering decisions."

Levine's comments follow an effort to institute a 'Summer of Pride'
instead of limiting Pride celebrations to June.
