PARIS (TND) — Organizers of the Paris Olympics apologized Sunday after
an apparent reenactment of “The Last Supper” by drag performers drew
international ire.

The Friday performance came during a floating parade along the River
Seine commemorating the beginning of the Olympic Games. During the
parade, a group of performers dressed in drag appeared to invoke
Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper,” a famous painting depicting a
scene from the Gospel of John in which Jesus Christ announces one of his
apostles will betray him.

Taking to X, the official Olympic Games account explained the scene
aimed to make viewers “aware of the absurdity of violence between human
beings.” Still, major figures such as House Speaker Mike Johnson, X
owner Elon Musk and Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker expressed
outrage, describing the scene as a mockery of Christianity.

Paris 2024 spokesperson Anne Descamps on Sunday said the scene, a
collaboration with French choreographer Thomas Jolly, had not been
intended to disrespect "any religious group."

“On the contrary, I think (with) Thomas Jolly, we really did try to
celebrate community tolerance,” Descamps said at an International
Olympic Committee news conference. “Looking at the result of the polls
that we shared, we believe that this ambition was achieved. If people
have taken any offense we are, of course, really, really sorry.”

No you're not and it's going to cost you a lot of advertising revenue.
