COVID hospitalizations are probably the best parameter of the current status: https://i.ibb.co/VvjmXx5/COVID-Hospitalizations.png As the above graph shows, Hospitalizations Nationwide are now at 100,000. October 1, they were 30,000. They previously have been as high as 60,000, at the end of July, and the end of April. Above graph is from Wikipedia Statistics of the COVID-19 Pandemic: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statistics_of_the_COVID-19_pandemic_in_the_United_States#Progression_charts if you scroll down two charts to "Current COVID-19-related hospitalizations" You can try to find data for your own area, State/County/City. Total Hospitalizations should probably be more prominently reported in the news as a determiner of the current situation, as more tests = more cases.
