Re: CBC Massey Lectures: Alex Neve on Human Rights

Worth pointing out the difference between what we call “human rights”,
and what the USians refer to as “civil rights”.

As far as I understand it, the concept of “civil rights” is directly
based on those “rights” that are spelled out in the 🇺🇸 Constitution.
If it’s not mentioned in there, then you don’t get it.

Whereas “human rights” are supposed to be something fundamental and
universal, recognized as the right thing by just about everybody,
regardless of their legal system.

An example of the difference is the right to privacy. This is regarded
as a basic human right. Sure, some will immediately mention the 4th
Amendment of the US Constitution on “Unreasonable Search and Seizure”,
but that only restricts what the Government can do, it doesn’t prevent
private companies from snooping on you.
