“Rockwell wrote a memoir called What Was I Thinking?, then went on a comedy
tour titled “The Annulment Tour.” In 2001, the pair made a stiff mutual
appearance on Larry King Live, in which Conger apologized to Rockwell,
saying that she’d gone on the show, foolishly, to get the attention of an
ex. Rockwell was clearly still angry. Both of them were publicizing
projects—his book, her website—that didn’t pan out. By 2003, their fame had
faded into tabloid history.
Two decades later, Conger was mostly amused, looking back. “People are mean
and it was probably a dumb idea, but it’s not even on the scale of the bad
things people experience,” she said. At the height of her reality
celebrity, she had tried to launch a lifestyle brand called Darva’s House,
which was focused on gardening, fitness, and cooking, the sort of
brand-building that would become par for the course for reality stars
twenty years later. Back in 2000—before Instagram or, for most people,
Wi-Fi—it had no chance to succeed.
