During college  school, when  I was living in an apartment (basement in a
multi-unit divided house) , I had to stay at a  center for one month. I
unplugged EVERYTHING (including the refrigerator) when I left. There was
absolutely nothing electric turned on in that house for 30 consecutive
days.  It was a hot month, August maybe. 
The bill I got for electricity that month was HIGHER than when I was in the
house actually using electricity the previous month. 
I called the power company, and they explained to me that prices go up “for
everyone” in times of high demand, so you can pay more even if you use
less.
I asked her how I could pay more if I used ZERO.
She proceeded to argue with me that it’s “not possible” to use zero.
No lights at all, she asked? Nope.
She proceeded to rattle off appliances.  No TV, no AC, no fans, washing
machine, vacuum cleaner, kitchen stove? Nope.
It is impossible that you didn’t use a refrigerator or freezer though,
right? NO I UNPLUGGED IT FOR THE PAST MONTH. 
And you know what she did? She accused me of LYING, and that was the end of
that.
