No More Oranges ???

The most popular breakfast beverage worldwide is at risk
of disappearing due to disease and bad weather destroying
crops.

Orange trees in the US and Brazil have suffered from citrus
greening disease caused by sap-sucking insects that kill
trees after making the existing fruit bitter.

And Florida has also been hit by hurricanes that have
destroyed much of America's supply.

Together, Florida and Brazil account for more than 85
percent of the global orange juice supply, making up a
large part of the economies.

This year's harvest is down by 24 percent compared to
2023, leading orange juice supply prices to jump by
20 percent.

   Well, nothing rhymes with it ....

   In any case, the crop diseases DO seem to be
   uncontrollable. Despite heavy efforts, they
   keep spreading. They KILL the trees.

   Florida, well, it's turning all its old orange
   groves into condos anyhow. Brazil may actually
   get a harsher deal.

   The only way to deal with the diseases may be
   to nuke ALL orange trees - except for some
   small isolated greenhouse examples. No trees
   means the disease ends. THEN you have to start
   repopulating. That'd take decades.

   Odd fact, many citrus trees are actually TWO
   trees ... roots from one species grafted to
   a top from another. The alien roots are better
   at being roots and the tops are better at
   producing really nice fruit. No all-in-one
   hybrid has ever been achieved.

   Oh well, the chemical people WILL come up with
   some artificial goo it calls "orange flavor".
