Progressive black crime wasteland Oakland airport name change approved, setting up showdown with SFO

Oakland’s airport would rename itself San Francisco Bay Oakland 
International Airport under a plan given initial approval Thursday by 
port commissioners, setting up a confrontation with officials in San 
Francisco who say the change will confuse air travelers and divert 
traffic from their facility.

The vote came after weeks of controversy over the potential name change. 
San Francisco officials have said travelers bound for their city’s 
airport may unintentionally fly to Oakland if its name starts with San 
Francisco.

San Francisco has pledged to sue Oakland if it goes through with the 
name change. And the city’s Board of Supervisors has condemned the name 
change, as have supervisors in San Mateo County, where the San Francisco 
airport is located.

“We are disappointed that Oakland did not take the opportunity to work 
collaboratively with us to develop alternative names and to avoid 
litigation,” said San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu. “We will have 
further updates in the coming days.”

Before the Oakland Port Commission’s vote on Thursday, the Alameda 
County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution supporting the name 
change, and defending the use of the term to describe the East Bay airport.

“The term San Francisco Bay Area is commonly known in California as the 
9-county region of California surrounding and including the San 
Francisco Bay,” the proclamation said.

Oakland officials are hoping to generate more traffic for the airport by 
making travelers headed to San Francisco and the greater Bay Area more 
aware of its location. While passenger traffic at the Oakland airport 
has bounced up from the lows of the pandemic, it has not yet matched 
pre-pandemic levels, according to monthly statistics.
