If you don't have water and CO2, photosynthesis doesn't work.  The 
maples have stored all the sugar they need for spring down in the roots 
by now. If they have extra sun and water, they'll just top off the tank.

Now it's up to the trees to drop some dead limbs so there'll be enough 
wood to boil the sap in the spring.
