I recently came across UFOBBS File #2097, the old alt.alien.visitors 
Usenet FAQ from October 1992 -- one of the earliest organized attempts 
to document UFO research, alien contact claims, and the community that 
had grown up around them. For those who weren't online back then, 
alt.alien.visitors was one of the busiest Usenet UFO groups of the era, 
and this FAQ was its central reference document.

I had it summarized and updated with 2026 context. Given that 
alt.alien.visitors appears to be slightly disorganized nowadays, it 
seemed fitting to post this here. The original FAQ was 130KB and roughly 
67 printed pages. What follows is a condensed but faithful summary 
covering all major sections, with commentary on what has and hasn't held 
up over 30 years.

There is a lot of noise on Usenet these days. I'm posting this in the 
hope that anyone with a genuine interest in the serious side of UAP/UFO 
research might find it useful -- both as a historical record and as a 
reminder of how much careful, dedicated work was done long before 
governments started officially acknowledging the phenomenon.

the busiest early Usenet groups dedicated to UFO discussion, and this 
FAQ was compiled as a reference for new members and an organized 
repository of community knowledge.

The FAQ runs to approximately 130KB (around 67 printed pages) and covers 
alien races, abduction research, key UFOlogists, classified projects,

2. ALIEN RACES

The document catalogues nine main alien groups regularly discussed on 
alt.alien.visitors. It presents multiple perspectives -- scientific, New 
Age, and conspiracy -- on the better-known species. Most descriptions 
rely heavily on a single channelled source: the "Revelations of 
Awareness" newsletter published by Cosmic Awareness Communications.

2.1 GREYS (RETICULANS)
-----------------------

The Greys are identified as the most commonly encountered alien race in 
UFOlogy. The FAQ presents three distinct viewpoints:

   Scientific/researcher view: A race of unknown motive, conducting 
abductions and tests for unclear reasons. Their existence is inferred 
from the consistency of abductee testimonies rather than physical proof.

   New Age view: Greys are associated with negative energy and are 
linked to the Reptoids. Their motives are considered known and malevolent.

   Conspiracy view: The Greys' crashed spacecraft were recovered by the 
U.S. government. A secret treaty allowed Greys to abduct humans in 
exchange for technology transfer. The Greys subsequently broke the deal.

Three physical sub-types are described:

   Type 1: Two to four feet tall, extremely slender, large penetrating 
black slanted eyes (no pupils), vestigial mouth and nose, very large 
head with pointed chin. Skin ranges from dark grey to pale white. No hair.

   Type 2: Similar to Type 1 but around six inches taller; appears to 
give orders to the others.

   Type 3: Stocky "security guard" type. Deep-set eyes, round O-shaped 
mouth, square breast-plate with concentric circles. Reportedly smells 
like burnt match heads.

Additional variants described as reptilian-like or praying mantis-like 
are also noted, as are reported human-Grey hybrids. Primary sources 
cited: David Jacobs' "Secret Life," Whitley Strieber's "Communion," Budd 
Hopkins' "Missing Time" and "Intruders."

2.2 REPTOIDS (ORION EMPIRE / DRACO)

A reptilian race from the Draco system described as bent on conquest. 
The Reptoids are said to control the Greys by means of an implant -- the 
same type of implant the Greys are placing in humans. They are presented 
as the masterminds behind the abduction programme. Their larger strategy 
involves using newly created human-Grey hybrids (also implanted) to 
defeat the "Confederation of Humans." The document notes, somewhat wryly 
with a reference to the TV series V, that Reptoids use humans as food.

2.3 PLEIADIANS
---------------

Described as a collective of extraterrestrials from the Pleiades star 
system, also said to originate "from various times in our future." Their 
culture is ancient, seeded from another universe, and centered on love. 
They are presented as ambassadors helping Earth through a transition 
from the third to the fourth dimension. Their stated reason for contact 
is to warn humanity of "a chance of tyranny in the future" and to 
inspire humans to take charge of their own reality. They communicate 
through human channels rather than physical appearance.

The most prominent contact case cited is that of Swiss farmer Billy 
Meier, who reportedly had over 130 physical and telepathic contacts 
between 1976 and 1982 with a Pleiadian woman named Samjese. Channeller 
Barbara Marciniak and her book "Bringers of the Dawn" are also cited.

2.4 ARYANS (BLONDES / NORDICS)

Described as blond Nordic humanoids who work alongside the Greys. Said 
to have been captured by the Reptoids and implanted. They are notably 
described as tending to switch loyalties between the Reptoids and the 
Confederation of Humans, making them an unreliable faction.

2.5 THE BLUES (STAR WARRIORS)
-------------------------------

Translucent-skinned, large almond-eyed beings of small stature. Their 
core teaching: "Pursue Your Passion -- follow your own way, do your own 
thing, don't be pressured into being anything but what and who you are."

Their story comes from Robert Morningsky, a Hopi/Apache dancer. When the 
Greys approached the U.S. government around 1947-48 to form a treaty, 
the Blues arrived simultaneously and advised against it, warning it 
would lead to disaster. They offered to teach peace and harmony if 
humanity would disarm. The military declined. Most Blues left; a few 
remained in Northern Mexico and Arizona and made a treaty with the Hopi, 
where they are known as Star Warriors. The Greys began monitoring the 
Blues, forcing them into hiding. Hopi legend is referenced: the 
"children of the feather" (sky beings) versus the "children of the 
reptile" (underground beings, also called "two hearts").

2.6 CONFEDERATION OF HUMANS

An organization of alien groups born from positive energy, whose purpose 
is to help and protect humanity. Members include Vega, Arcturus, Sirius, 
Pleiades, and other humanoid civilizations. Opposed by the Orion Empire 
(Reptoids and Greys).

2.7 ARCTURUS, SIRIUS, AND VEGA

Listed as members of the Confederation of Humans. The FAQ acknowledges 
that research on each was incomplete at the time of writing, with more

A grouping of negative-energy factions including the Reptoids and Greys.

abduction phenomenon with notable balance. Experiences typically involve 
memory loss and "missing time," with accounts recovered spontaneously or 
under hypnotic regression. Encounters generally involve being taken 
aboard a craft, subjected to physical and mental examination, then 
returned. Many witnesses exhibit signs consistent with Post-Traumatic 
Stress Disorder.

3.1 THE SKEPTICAL POSITION

Philip Klass (Aviation Week & Space Technology) is cited as the leading 
skeptical authority. Klass argued that hypnotists inadvertently lead 
subjects -- that media saturation primes people having nightmares or 
experiencing common "missing time" episodes to construct abduction 
narratives under hypnosis. He attributed many nocturnal experiences to 
narcolepsy, and recommended clinical medical consultation rather than 
contact with abduction researchers.

3.2 THE RESEARCHERS' POSITION

Budd Hopkins and David Jacobs are the two principal researchers arguing 
for a physical reality to abductions. Hopkins emphasised the 
cross-corroboration of accounts too similar to be coincidental. Jacobs 
was systematically categorising accounts to identify patterns, 
developing increasingly detailed theories about the programme's purpose.

3.3 PHYSICAL EVIDENCE

The FAQ acknowledges a range of potential physical traces: burned grass 
and earth at landing sites, radar data, film and photographic evidence, 
and bodily marks on abductees including scoop-marks, incisions, burns, 
apparent radiation exposure, bruises, and inflammation. It notes 
honestly that whether any of this constitutes conclusive evidence is "a 
subjective value call."

5.1 THE AURORA PROJECT / BLACK PROJECTS

One of the most grounded sections of the document, drawing on Aviation 
Week & Space Technology. Two classified aircraft are described. The 
first, nicknamed the "Pulser," produced a distinctive segmented 
(linked-sausage) smoke trail and a loud 1-2 Hz pulse, and was estimated 
to travel at 3,500 mph at altitudes above 50,000 feet. The FAQ provides 
a technically credible explanation: Pulsed Detonation Engines (PDEs), 
which use controlled detonation shock waves to achieve supersonic 
combustion, offering high fuel efficiency, scalability, high 
thrust-to-weight ratio, mechanical simplicity, and the ability to 
operate outside the atmosphere. A second, triangular and quiet aircraft 
was observed flying alongside F-117 stealth aircraft. Both were 
attributed to classified Nevada facilities.

5.2 NASA SHUTTLE FOOTAGE (SEPTEMBER 1992)

5.3 THE PLANETOID / WORMWOOD

Begins with genuine science: the 1992 discovery of 1992 QB1, the first 
confirmed Kuiper Belt object beyond Pluto, by David Jewitt and Jane Luu 
using the University of Hawaii's telescope. It then layers two 
speculative interpretations: (1) a channelled claim that the object is a 
hollowed-out Reptoid spacecraft; and (2) a biblical parallel to 
"Wormwood" from the Book of Revelation. The entry also notes that the 
Ukrainian word for Chernobyl translates as "wormwood."

5.4 PROJECT BLUE BOOK
-----------------------

A factual history of the USAF's official UFO investigation. Project Sign 
was established in December 1947 following General Twining's assessment 
that UFO reports warranted study. It became Project Grudge in 1948 
(which recommended reducing the investigation's scope), then Project 
Blue Book in March 1952 when public sightings increased again. Blue 
Book's three goals were to explain reported sightings, assess whether 
UFOs posed a security threat, and determine if they represented 
exploitable technology. Its final conclusions in 1969 were negative on 
all three counts: no extraterrestrial vehicles, no security threat, no 
technology beyond current scientific knowledge. The Blue Book files are 
available on microfilm at the National Archives.

5.5 THE ROSWELL CRASH INCIDENT (1947)

A detailed account based on Randle and Schmitt's "UFO Crash at Roswell" 
(1991). On July 2, 1947, Mac Brazel heard a loud crash near Roswell, NM. 
The following day he found a debris field three-quarters of a mile long 
and 300 feet wide, containing lightweight I-beams and parchment-thin 
metallic material that could not be cut, bent, or burned. A second crash 
site was found on July 8, two and a half miles away. Civilian witnesses 
found a metallic object and four bodies: 4-5 feet tall, large 
pear-shaped heads, large eyes, no ears or hair, pinkish-grey leathery 
skin, grey one-piece suits. Civilians were escorted away by the 
military. Brazel subsequently retracted his account, replacing it with a 
weather balloon story. The case remained officially closed until Jesse 
Marcel broke his silence in 1970.

Information Officer" at relevant agencies. The US Government Manual was

Free UFO class: Penn State University offered a free public class on UFO 
topics every Monday at 7pm in State College, PA, running through 
December 1992.

Inter-Library Loan: The FAQ author specifically recommends the ILL 
system for accessing the cited books at no cost, noting that nearly all

10. CONTEXT AND RELEVANCE AS OF 2026
-------------------------------------------------

Reading UFOBBS #2097 in 2026 is both instructive and humbling -- a 
reminder of how much serious, careful work was done by volunteers long 
before governments acknowledged the phenomenon.

10.1 WHAT HAS CHANGED: THE UAP MAINSTREAMING
----------------------------------------------

When this FAQ was written, UFO research was conducted almost entirely 
outside official channels. The idea of a Congressional hearing on UAPs, 
or a New York Times front-page story validating military encounters, 
would have seemed fantastical to the people on alt.alien.visitors.

That changed in December 2017 when the New York Times reported on AATIP 
(Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program) -- a $22 million 
Pentagon programme investigating UAP cases. Authenticated Navy 
gun-camera footage (FLIR, Gimbal, GoFast) was released showing objects 
with genuinely anomalous flight characteristics. By 2022, the first 
public Congressional UAP hearings in over fifty years had been held, and 
AARO (All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office) was established. In 2023-24, 
former intelligence official David Grusch testified under oath that the 
U.S. government possesses non-human craft and biological material of 
non-human origin. These claims remain unconfirmed but have not been 
officially refuted.

The organizations this 1992 FAQ catalogued -- MUFON, CUFOS, FUFOR -- 
were doing serious work decades before any government acknowledgement. 
The BBS networks, ParaNet, and alt.alien.visitors itself served as early 
distributed intelligence-gathering infrastructure for a phenomenon that 
eventually forced its way onto the official agenda.

10.2 WHAT REMAINS UNVERIFIED

The alien taxonomy in Section 2 (Greys, Reptoids, Pleiadians, Blues, 
etc.) remains entirely unverified. The specific descriptions derive 
almost entirely from channelled material rather than physical evidence. 
No credible scientific evidence for any of the described entities exists 
as of 2026.

The Roswell account is presented faithfully from Randle and Schmitt's 
1991 book. Subsequent investigation and declassified documents suggest 
the debris may have originated from the secret Project Mogul balloon 
programme, though debate continues among researchers.

The Black Projects section holds up remarkably well. The Pulser aircraft 
descriptions are consistent with what became publicly known about 
hypersonic research. Pulsed Detonation Engines remain an active area of 
aerospace research in 2026.

10.3 ABDUCTION RESEARCH: A CHANGED LANDSCAPE

Sleep paralysis research and the work of Elizabeth Loftus on false 
memory formation have cast significant doubt on hypnotic regression as a 
reliable recall method. Klass's skeptical position, as stated in the 
FAQ, has been substantially vindicated by subsequent cognitive science. 
That said, the core of unexplained cases -- multiple witnesses, physical 
traces, physiological effects -- has not been adequately explained by 
conventional psychology or atmospheric phenomena alone.

10.4 SCIENTIFIC CONTEXT

The SETI section in the FAQ lists NASA as running a formal SETI 
programme as of 1992. That programme was defunded by Congress in 1993, 
and serious SETI work moved to the SETI Institute and, since 2015, 
Breakthrough Listen. As of 2026, no confirmed detection of 
extraterrestrial intelligence has been made. However, the James Webb 
Space Telescope has transformed our ability to characterize exoplanet 
atmospheres, and multiple worlds with potential bio signature candidates 
have been identified. The scientific consensus that life almost 
certainly exists elsewhere in the universe has strengthened considerably 
-- even as the specific entities described in documents like this remain 
without evidence.

10.5 THE ORGANIZATIONS TODAY

Of the 65 organizations listed, many have since dissolved or merged. 
MUFON remains active with an online reporting database. CUFOS was 
struggling by the 2010s but maintained its archives. CSICOP became CSI 
(Committee for Skeptical Inquiry) and continues publishing the Skeptical 
Inquirer. ParaNet dissolved as the open internet rendered BBS networks 
obsolete. The Intruders Foundation closed following Budd Hopkins' death 
in 2011. The institutional landscape of 2026 is substantially different: 
Congressional UAP task forces, intelligence community whistleblower 
protections, and NASA's own UAP study team (launched 2022) have 
partially taken over the role that these volunteer networks played for 
decades.
