We watched Full Metal Jacket when I was in a college ethics class and there was someone in the class who actually served in Vietnam. He said that blanket parties like this were a common occurrence in boot camp because they would send any one they could to Vietnam and Pyle is the kind of person that would get the whole squad killed.

He would've been discharged. They're probably in need for any man in the frontlines. DoD enacted the Project 100,000 program lowering mental and medical standards during the war to increase manpower. Forrest and Bubba from Forrest Gump would've never be in the Army if not for that.
Pyle did toughen up and caught up after that while losing his sanity.

This actually does happen in the military. It's called a "blanket party." When I was in the military they happened rarely, but still happened. The soap is used simply because it leaves no visable marks. But it does leave big knots under the skin, which are very painful and take a while to heal. Its best to not do anything stupid to attract negative attention to yourself from the drill sergeant. You really don't want to be that guy.

I never really got an "anti-military" vibe from the first half of this movie, I more felt like it was conveying the message of how destructive and arduous the basic training process can be, especially for people who were involuntarily drafted into the military.

It has to be a tough process because they're literally turning you into a killing machine (which would involve lots of tough shit to desensitize you before you enter the real battle), and mentally, not everybody can take it (which is generally why you get better results when people sign up voluntarily because they tend to have somewhat of an idea of what they're signing up for and are definitely slightly more mentally prepared).

I know private Pyle is a useless piece of shit, but I can't really blame him. He wasn't meant to be in the military, but that's the hand we was dealt and it only took the first step of the whole ordeal to break him.

I'm 16 right now, ending my Sophmore year and understand this to a point. Same with a the suicide scene. I was basically Pyle growing up. I was a fat kid who didn't care for school and didn't conform to others ideals. I played football in middle school and got into somewhat better shape than before. But I still went through a lot of bullshit and still do. I only played half of football season this year because I spend 8months doing an advanced powerlifters workout and screwed up my back in so many ways. I was given so much shit and berated by everyone to the point I was ready to give up. But I'm better now and I've passed the older guys in strength and skill by a longshot because I'm smart about it now. But it's still no different at home. My dad is worse than Hartman, to him I'm just a servant to do everything, me and my mom both while he sits on his lazy ass and does nothing. To him I think I'm the disappointment and can't conform to his "standards" like Pyle couldn't for the Marines. Pyle was most likely drafted and if he wasn't he still shouldn't have been allowed into basic or should've been sent home before something the suicide scene and the blanket party could've been avoided. All in all and to sum things up. People are dicks. People like the ones in this platoon can suck it up. I know it's it's movie but I'm sure there's a few who act just like this. Instead of beating him try and help more, there's consequences and punishments in the end. People are just to fucking ignorant and stupid
