I have to wonder what that guy's problem is in the 2036 future. Everybody is living comfortably, I don't see forced labor or the great class divide like in the movie "Metropolis". He comes across as a complete kook blinded by some twisted medieval fantasy ideal and wants suffering to return (he didn't hide this fact).
Yes, we have a kooks like this in our world, today, but they seem to be in the extreme minority. Even the most green hippie would find this guy's 'vision' way too over the top.

The parallels to now are unmistacable - Trump & the Warlord & many other things - the sickness - & even the earth & humanity under threat with global warming. - science has largely been perverted into tge goals of endless war - & all for profit. We must grab hold of things & set a new course while we still can. The film is a profound masterpiece of course & I've felt that since first seeing it decades back.

Myself, i think this movie was made to remind folks that WW1 was supposed to be the war to end all wars but Germany was busy flouting the treaty of Versailles and openly gearing up for war. Even the US knew this despite attempts at not joining with Britain . So here is movie showing that War is not glorious but the means by which the powerful will use the ordinary folk as cannon fodder to achieve the power they crave.

@ChaosTrident Funny how all 3 Trump supporters came at the same time, with an almost identical and very vague message. What have Trump's policy makers actually done to help ordinary people? And how is Trump LESS like 1984 than the Democrats? If anything he is more 1984, they are more Brave New World.

This movie is a classic, and is NOT cheesy as described above. The special effects were excellent considering the movie was made in 1936, long before CGI was even a thought. Compare these special effects with some of the sci-fi movies made in the 60s and they stand head and shoulders above the later movies which were cheesy.
Raymond Massey was a great actor whose basso delivery gave a seriousness and an importance to any character he ever played. This movie will stand up to the modern version of H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds starring Tom Cruise considering the technology they had to work with in 1936. Remember, many of these scenes were carefully constructed models. Fast forward to the Japanese sci-fi movies of Godzilla and Mothra done in the late 50s, and Things to Come make them look like amateurish Kodak 8 films. This was an era when British films not only rivaled Hollywood, but in my opinion, surpassed them.
This movie is kind of a "New World Order" with a conscience and the real purpose to elevate and benefit mankind through technology. Today we have HAARP, nuclear weapons, and incessant spying through the use of technology, but it is the technology of Frankenstein and Dr. Strangelove combined.

Use of solar energy, wrist watches that were telephones,-only a portion of some of the things that the movie shows in 1936. Many of these technologies have come to fruition. Cheesy science fiction? Not if you realize that the movie was really ahead of it's time. Not only in content but the use of special effects such as it was in the 30's.

It is very easy in the year 2016 to use the word "cheesey" related to an 80 year old film! Wells, and in his way, Korda, were trailblazers, and should be given credit for their insightful work!

Prophetic. My grandmother saw this film when it debuted. My grandparents (both English) feared that Hitler would launch an attack on England somewhere between 1937 and 1939. Their fears came to fruition soon enough.

Gosh - this was made in 1936 & "war is imminent" in 1940. How extraordinarily true.
And the price on the 1966 newspaper was FOUR POUNDS !!

A magnificent production for 1936. I first saw this film in 1947 on an early television set. The impact has remained with me for almost 70 years. Acting is outstanding and the props and sets remarkable for the era. This is hardly a "cheesy" production considering it was state of the art in the 1930's. It contains a message that is sorely lacking in today's society.
