Not your average Wednesday... currently locked inside my own house!
I’vralways thought this impossible...
So, my bedroom has a Yale lock on it, for which I don’t have the key and so don’t use. This morning, I went downstairs to make breakfast and unbeknownst to me the catch on the lock slipped and the door locked shut behind me.
My front door is one of those where you have to unlock it with a key from both the inside and outside. My house keys are in my bedroom.
As no-one else is in the house I am therefore TRAPPED.
Currently trying to get in touch with my landlord who hopefully has a key - luckily my office found it hilarious...

this also has some pretty serious fire safety implications - i'd look into getting a permanent key somewhere accessible so you can get out if necessary in future.

It is.
A lot of locksmiths will tell you all doors should have a easy release on one side to let you out in case of fire.
When I got locked out, the locksmith told me that no exit door should require you to have a key to get through it to escape.

Our front door has a key for both sides but we put it on the chain at night so we don't need a key if we had to get out.

The best way is to have the deadbol with a key hole on the outside and a turny bit on the inside.

The other day I made a comment on another subreddit about how it was possible to get locked inside my house, and got a lot of downvotes and replies from people (Americans, I think?) who thought that such a lock design was too ridiculously stupid and unsafe to be real. I was pretty surprised by the response. This post confirms that I'm not crazy, so thank you OP.

I find some Americans seem to disbelieve anything different from their experience. I’m British, living in Japan, and if I mention it I often get called a lying weeaboo :-)

I'm fairly certain that's the same post where I have an Australian trying to tell me that being in the middle lane is keeping left and then telling me I'm wrong when I say it isn't. I have to say I'm surprised how much support the middle lane hogger got in that thread

I came across this scenario whilst delivering once. Had to pass the parcel through a window. I made a joke about her reminding me of Rumpel Stilskin. It wasn't til much later than I realised the princess trapped in the tower was called Rapunzel and I'd actually compared her to a hideous troll.

I got locked in the bathroom for over an hour once, dodgy lock on the door. My housemate was in bed n so dead to the world. When he eventually heard me he was able to do some wizardry n open it from outside. When the landlord came round to fix it he decided to test it, then got locked in himself n jumped out the window 🙄😂

TIL: Linus Yale Jr., who invented the Yale lock, was distantly related to Yale University's namesake Elihu Yale. (He was descended from Elihu's uncle, Thomas Yale).

I’m free! Eventually made it to work after my landlord told me what the code to the little box with the spare key to the front door. Good thing I had gotten dressed before going down for breakfast, and that it’s warmed up recently!
For the bedroom door, had a family friend give me instructions on creating something out of a 2L coke bottle that I could slide down the groove and catch the latch to open the door but couldn’t quite get the hang of it.
Eventually called the locksmith who came in about an hour and then tried a similar approach with different sized sheets of plastic and he had it open in a few minutes...
Turns out the landlord doesn’t have the key to the door anyway which is annoying... moving out next week though so not too fussed!

If there's a big enough gap between the frame and the latch, you could try slipping something in to open it - cutting a plastic bottle in half vertically is your best bet. Credit/debit type cards don't work, they're either too thick or they just snap.
NB No I'm not a burglariser, my mate did a similar thing when he was at uni many moons ago, and that's how we got back into his room.

This happened to me, too. I had to call a locksmirth and I sent the bill to my landlady who wrote me a very strongly-worded email about how she won't pay for my mistake again. I wrote her back with an even stronger-worded message telling her that my mistake wouldn't have occurred if she'd been able to comply with fire safety regulations.
She fixed the locks and I never had a problem again.

Doh! That's pretty daft! Maybe something like this with a spare key by the door (harder for the key to go missing without noticing)
I once locked myself into my mums house, her Yale has a setting that you can lock it closed (the handle on the inside wont work). Somehow I managed to set it to this and close the door, so i ended up climbing out of the window and opening the door with the key.
