The Boy and the Witch
2090
This was an Arun fairytale where a boy had to go out and work to bring money for his family. One day, he is robbed by a Beziezian, and when he comes home, his
mom is enraged at him "You fool! You let yourself be robbed [by a Betch]. Now we can't eat tonight! You are banished from this house". Sad, blue, and not knowing what to do, an old woman steps out from an alley way and makes him an offer "I will give you gold, but you need to find me some rare ingredients for my spells!" the boy dismisses the old woman as somebody senile, until he sees a flash behind him, like a lightning strike only there wasn't a cloud in the sky. The witch handed the boy 2 big gold coins but warned him that he needed to repay her
He runs home, his mother furious that he had returned, but upon seeing the gold coins he is waving about, her anger turns to joy...,,
(the boy got greedier and greedier, taking on bigger and increasingly difficult risks to the point the last one almost killed him and he did not get the ingredient that the witch demanded from him. and when he could not repay his debt, the witch curses him. His entire life crumbles rapidly. His mother ages rapidly, becoming whithered and old, his house burns down, he becomes nearly blind and crippled and he must beg in the street for the rest of his life)
..in the more anti-beziezian version, he had been forced into a Beziezian identity, being spat on and cursed in the street, and the Beziezian who robbed him was turned into a prosperous Arun. The witch did this to further spite the boy.
(modern retellings either leave out the Beziezian parts entirely, or turn the Beziezian into a school bully, or some other generic villianous figure)
Funny Water
This is an Arun slang term for water polluted by chemicals. This was a very big
problem on Arus in the 2180s and 2190s, especially around East Island, JJC. People would go to the Joclyn Joyce River in that area in order to get high on the chemical waste being discharged into the river there. After two fatalities in 2192 (East Island), the Arun government cracked down hard on those chemical companies, and formed the EPA. Scince then, there is almost no water pollution on Arus.
