There really isn't the magic of running DOOM on something it wasn't to meant to be on. Like a toaster. Or a watch.
This is just an app and android tablet.

He could've downloaded and installed the Android port of 1993 Doom on it. Pair a Bluetooth keyboard or controller, and he's done. That's all he did, but with X-cloud.
The only thing that made this a story was this Android tablet is built into a fridge. This is borderline clickbait, the type aimed at the general public.
Really, this is not impressive.
Now if he took a smart fridge from 10 or so years ago, something that was running QNX or maybe a proprietary OS, and somehow managed to get X-cloud to work with that, I would be far more impressed.

I admit I feel a bit like Zoolander yelling out "What is this, a school for ants!?!" when I say this, because I'm clearly seeing the trees for the forest here, but... why would anyone do this? Just boredom? If the guy needs a software problem to work on that has real value, I have about a dozen or so.

We in CA are going to be bent over in the future by California electric companies because of state renewable energy mandates. Some refrigerator are set up to observed religious mandates for Jews in what is referred to by some as sabbath mode. I don't see many smart appliances for people how want to keep some of their money, why isn't there a time of use turn back mode similar to thermostats for refrigerators? Refrigerators with sabbath mode would seem to have the necessary hardware. Load curtailment is probably better than storage economically speaking. 4 to 9 p.m. remember 4 to 9 p.m.
Where are my smart appliances?
Why should any heavy load start when I'm using a 1000 watt microwave? Can't the refrigerator, the air conditioner, the freezer almost any heavy load just wait its turn in line? This would smooth out demand over minute time period. People don't like long latency so don't lock out microwave ovens, the tv or coffee pots.
Playing games on a refrigerator is like sending email on a calculator. Cool, maybe, but not very useful for most.

I remember seeing the first Internet-connected Samsung and LG fridges about 15, maybe 20, years ago. They were ridiculous then, and they remain ridiculous now. But, hey, you can play Doom on them now.

It's running Android, so yes, you can run the Android ports of Doom, Quake..anything that has an Android port for it.
What's in this fridge is just an oversized Android tablet, and most likely has Bluetooth as well. Android Doom ports normally support Bluetooth controllers.
Honestly, this is a non-story. Would running the X-cloud service/app on an Android phone or tablet make the news here? The only difference is this tablet is built into the door of a fridge. Um...Yay?

I thought this was going to be another "Oh look, I got [1993] Doom running on a $5 digital watch" type story, so it's refreshing to see a different variant of this trope. But technically impressive? Not really, as what's in the fridge door is still a full fledged computer somebody managed to get Doom running on by jumping through some hoops.
