To the "sites" poster
Yes they were always crooked, a borderline scam to lure in desperate people. They use tactics such as screaming FREE!!!, and once they snag all of the personal info required when registering, they then say "oh, now you need to enter your credit card info....". Even if you back out at your point, they just snagged your PI anyway, and will sell it to any low life scum information broker that they can find.
Then they do everything they can to force you to use *their* system to communicate to any prospective mates, instead of using chat, e-mail, Facebook, or anything else that's outside their system.
At least that's how it was way back in 2001 when I tried them. I'm certain it's way worse now.
And of course, that "hot chick" you are speaking with is really a 50 year old man with a beer gut, who forgot what a shower is, and lives in a beat up old trailer in Dumbfuck, Arkansas.
Or maybe it's some crazy weirdo woman that looks nothing like the picture she stole out of Google Images who might light your bed on fire some night in the future.
Long story short, don't waste your time with dating sites

When I signed up for a "site" it was a pay site that only advertised that you could browse for free. They never said anything about being able to communicate for free. I had people send me email addresses through private messages... I have no idea if those people were 50 year old men or crazy weirdo women because I never ever replied to any of the email addresses I was sent. I also never paid the fee in order to be able to send messages using their system.
I doubt they really care what system you use to communicate with others. They only care that the initial contact was made by a PAID member. After that initial contact they really don't give a fuck if you choose to communicate using smoke signals or even styrofoam cups attached to a string. It's a site for meeting people, right? What purpose would limiting communication methods serve?
Doesn't matter to me because I'm not looking to meet anyone. Just stating that your experience has been different from mine, although my purpose was not the intended purpose.

I have tried tindr and bumble and they're nothing like what you are describing. HOWEVER, I never for once in my life thought that they could be selling my information so that's... scary af.
Tindr and bumble won't ask for your credit card info unless you pay for premium. They are 100% free to use. I just never realized that they're selling our info to get money to keep running the apps.

You might have lucked out because the sites I did try make sure that you had to use their system to communicate. This was to ensure lock in, and that you would continue to pay. They had good motivation to keep you from using regular e-mail and thus you being able to ditch them.
And yes, there were/are plenty of liars on those sites, as it's very easy for someone to claim that they are something they're not on the internet.
Maybe things changed in the past 20 years, but my initial experience was a real turn off.
Anything you enter into those forms when registring gets saved on their servers. Hitting cancel on the payment page does not remove what was entered before it. It's a good side hustle for them.

Telemetry is big business. Google does it, Facebook does it, even the small town newspaper site does it.
That's why almost every site you go to these days is bogged down with Javashit, often using Javashit telemetry 'applets' from several different information brokers running at once.
That said, we have got to be getting to the point of oversaturation by now, and really, how valuable is "Suzy Q went to site Y this month X times"? But apparently this kind of info is worth big money. :\
