You were told by your grandparents or parents that there was some Native American ancestry in your family, but *they* weren't raised in Native American culture or traditions, either, and they had no tribal affiliation. They could not identify any particular ancestor who was documented to be Native American. They were just passing on family folklore - that is, myth.
