All *southern* whites are racist...unless they moved there from the north. 
I've worked in NC, in both Charlotte (finance) and Raleigh-Durham (tech), 
and both locales have drawn thousands of northerners there for the work. 
The northerners have changed the culture *vastly* for the better, although 
the ignorant cracker mentality is still to be found.  Charlotte and the 
"Research Triangle" actually are pretty nice - even somewhat cosmopolitan, 
to the extent that's possible in the south.  I was really struck in both NC 
areas at how little twangy cracker-speak I heard.  It got immediately 
different as soon as you got a few miles away from those urban areas.  A 
few times, I went farther out - "out where you can hear the banjos at 
night" - and I realized I was in southern traitor land, where they still 
revered their Confederate "heroes" (traitors).

The south is backward and benighted.  It always will be.
