De-extinction of the woolly mammoth takes a major step
forwards: Scientists reconstruct the chromosomes of a
52,000-year-old creature - and it could allow them to
resurrect the lost species

An unusually well-preserved specimen was excavated in
Siberia in 2018

. . .

Actually they've been collecting genetic bits and
pieces for a long time now. Looks like there's
finally enough to re-fab the full mammoth genome.

NOT sure about the epigenetics however - those
are at least as important as the DNA itself.

The Plan seem to revolve around using Indian
elephants, inserting the mammoth DNA into an
egg, then using the elephant as an 'incubator'.

Not sure how the elephants feel about this.
   Nobody asks them.

Yea, it's all kind of "Jurassic Park" - but
there's not enough dino DNA for that. More
recent species though ... yea ... it CAN
   make it work.

It is not clear why the mammoths died out. MAY
have been climate change, food issues. A virus ?
May have also been that we ATE most of them.

Hey, wonder what happened to the Neanderthals ?
Bet it wasn't THEM, but US. Neanderthals did
well in a variety of climes, so skip the
'environment' bullshit. WE killed them ...
