There are natural processes that generate radio signals with seemingly 
intelligent structure which could be mistaken as alien communication.

As a kid I built a receiver for these signals from a scrapped TV, but 
couldn't get far enough away from power lines to hear much else.

A British project to locate lightning strikes from these signals resulted in 
a radio direction finder for warships that defeated the best Nazi effort to 
conceal their U-boot radio transmissions.

know was its direction so they could find and sink it.
