The cosmic microwave background radiation is sometimes referred to as
the "afterglow of the Big Bang"   The hydrogen/helium ratio in the
universe is about 3:1, which is exactly what we would expect if the
universe was once much hotter and smaller than it is now.  The
redshifts of distant galaxies just means they're all moving away from
each other, which is just what we would expect if they were the result
of some cosmic explosion.
