The pattern goes like this:

#1.  Identify what to look for, what tells you "This is life!"

#2.  Find it.

#3.  Bend over backwards to explain why your test is invalid, why
you didn't really find anything.

That's a straw man. What science insists is that bacteria CAN and
HAS survived dormant for longer than 100,000,000 years, and some
claim a quarter of a billion years. In rock.
