The author of My Sweet Orange Tree, José Mauro de Vasconcelos, had a remarkable life that was full of adventures and challenges. He was born in Rio de Janeiro on February 26, 1920, in a poor family of mixed Indian and Portuguese ancestry. When he was still very young, he moved to Natal, where he was raised by his relatives . He abandoned his medical studies in his second year and returned to Rio de Janeiro, where he worked as a boxing instructor, a painter's model, a banana farmer, a fisherman, and a teacher  . He started writing novels when he was 22 years old, using his own methods of research and observation .
