Let me share the greatest lie ever told inside General Motors. Pontiac engineers desperately wanted to build a mid-engine sports car in the 1980s. The corporate bean counters absolutely refused to fund it. So the engineers got sneaky. They went back to the boardroom and pitched the Fiero as a highly fuel-efficient, four-cylinder commuter car. They even used cheap suspension parts from the Chevy Chevette just to get the budget approved.

Once it was in production, Pontiac slowly transformed it into a genuine sports car. By 1988, they finally gave this Formula edition proper racing suspension. It handled so incredibly well that it actually started beating the Corvette on corporate test tracks. The higher ups absolutely panicked. You simply cannot humiliate the flagship Corvette! So what did GM do? The very year they finally perfected the Fiero, they permanently killed the entire program.
