In 2021, the AIAA CFD Vision 2030 IC Roadmap subcommittee released areport =
reviewing progress and challenges associated with thetechnology items ident=
ified on the Roadmap from its initial releasethrough 2020. This document id=
entified that while significant progresshad been made on key technology dem=
onstration items, many of theoriginal milestones were behind schedule. With=
 some of the findingssince 2014, some of these milestones are less critical=
 at present andnew items of study have been identified. This report was fol=
lowed by acompanion paper [2] presented at AIAA Aviation that provided an u=
pdatedRoadmap with shifted milestones and the addition of new technologymil=
estones as well as enhanced Domain definitions. This paper alsoprovided a T=
RL level scale to measure technology development appropriatefor this type o=
f community-level activity and performed an initialassessment of the tasks.=
 More detailed descriptions were also providedto assist in quantifying prog=
ress.

The CFD Vision 2030 Study (referred to hereafter as Study) contracted byNAS=
A was published in 2014 and has become an aspirational objective forfocusin=
g CFD development areas toward aerospace applications. ThisRoadmap identifi=
ed the six main technical domains for aligning researchas high performance =
computing (HPC), physical modeling, algorithms,geometry and grid generation=
, knowledge extraction, andmultidisciplinary analysis and optimization (MDA=
O), with subtopicswithin each of these maturing from 2015 to 2030. These ma=
turingtechnologies target the application of CFD to aerospace applications =
ofincreasing complexity through 2030. Development of these techniques isfun=
damental to the successful execution of a series of grand challengeproblems=
. The grand challenge problems are a stepping stone to routineapplication o=
f CFD to an array of design and development problems withsignificantly expa=
nded scope and complexity.

The CFD Vision 2030 Study, contracted by NASA, was published in 2014and has=
 become an aspirational objective for focusing CFD development onaerospace =
applications. The Study identified six main technical domainsfor aligning r=
esearch: high performance computing (HPC), physicalmodeling, algorithms, ge=
ometry and grid generation, knowledgeextraction, and multi-disciplinary ana=
lysis and optimization (MDAO).Within each domain, sub-disciplines (aka elem=
ents) illustrate thematuration of technology during the time period from 20=
15 to 2030.Each of the elements have theirown timeline to identify key tech=
nology milestones and technologydemonstrations. This Roadmap provides a com=
pact and informative summaryof future objectives and milestones, but some d=
etails are necessarilyomitted from the graphic due to space constraints. Th=
ese maturingtechnologies target the use of CFD for aerospace applications o=
fincreasing complexity which are represented in the Study by a series ofgra=
nd challenge problems. At the 2019 AIAA Aviation forum, five yearsafter the=
 Study was published, a special session was held with invitedlectures revie=
wing the progress and future in the six domains.Recognizing the ongoing uti=
lity of the Vision toward improving CFDtechnology, AIAA formed the CFD 2030=
 Integration Committee (IC). One ofthe charters of the IC is to maintain th=
e Roadmap by assessing progressand highlighting the ongoing needs of aerosp=
ace CFD. Shortly after the2019 Aviation Forum special session, the IC forme=
d a Roadmapsubcommittee to provide a detailed technical review of the Roadm=
ap andidentify progress with (and challenges to) following the outlinedtraj=
ectory. The Roadmap subcommittee released a report in June of 2021with thei=
r findings to provide further guidance to the researchcommunity. While this=
 report cannot be exhaustive and there are likelysome elements omitted or i=
nadvertently neglected, it represents inputsfrom a diverse group of experts=
 in the field. This paper describes theapproach taken, summarizes the findi=
ngs, and provides an update to theVision 2030 Roadmap reflecting the presen=
t understanding.

The results are encouraging. The market, which in 2010 was estimated at US$=
 180 million, is expected to grow at a 12.7 percent CAGR to $US 290.9 milli=
on by 2014. Key customers are large enterprises, design houses, and researc=
h organizations and universities. (At Digital Manufacturing Report, we have=
 interviewed a number of smaller companies using CFD, although obviously th=
e big enterprises will continue to account for the bulk of the technology's=
 use.)

The third season of Chicago Fire, an American drama television series with =
executive producer Dick Wolf, and producers Derek Haas, Michael Brandt, and=
 Matt Olmstead, premiered on Tuesday, September 23, 2014, at 10 pm on NBC t=
