Bring tools when you go. I got a price for new hatchback gas struts from my Nissan dealer: NZ$300 *each* (including shipping from Japan). Unfortunately there were no third-party options and nobody would re-fill the gas struts. Checked a junkyard and got a pair for NZ$100, including postage from another city in New Zealand. The only problem is there is of course no guarantee how long they will last. I rarely even open the hatch back, other than when checking the air pressure in the spare tyre from time to time.
