If it's a radio with an automatic-volume linked to the car's speed, then it could also be an issue with that speed sensor system. Possibly that "5 minutes" delay is due to something warming up before failing. It's very doubtful the battery itself is the cause, but it could be another sign that there are corrision problems elsewhere too ... possibly just that muck is flaking off the battery is being blown elsewhere.
