I don't know if they still have them, but a friend's Porsche 911L (yes, 
that is an L, a model only sold briefly in the USA about 1968 while 
adapting to US smog regulations!) has an oil LEVEL gauge, so you don't 
just get a warning but a pretty good readout of the whole level. That 
car has a dry-sump lubrication system, pumping oil out to a cooler, 
maybe they thought there was more chance of a leak...? But I think 
several high performance engines come with oil level gauges.
