      I just don's see that happening in the next 50 years or so. 
Suppose the auto makers do come up with some revolutionary battery 
design.  The electrical power needed  to recharge them would be large. 
Household wiring would need to be upgraded.  So would the supply lines 
to the houses and the power stations.
     I spent my working years fixing irrigation systems.  The electric 
wells were set up with interruptible service.  The power companies would 
shut them down as needed during the day so they could have enough power 
to keep the homes cool and the businesses running.

      Memory tells me the first ones had some growing pains.  That 
always seems to happen no matter how much the engineers claim they've 
tested things.
    I guess the idea of a CVT goes back to Leonardo Da Vince.    My dad 
had a Minneapolis Moline combine with a belted version of it.
     The picture shows the drive of what they called the Uni System if 
you're interested.

     The unit had a three speed transmission with reverse.  The variable 
part is the two big pulleys above the trailer wheels.  I think one 
pulley expanded while the other contracted.  That let the farmer vary 
the speed within each gear's range.
    I remember my dad's looking something like this when it had the 
grain head on.
