 China Mobile recently teamed up with Huawei and other partners to publish =
the 5G New Calling Technical White Paper. This resource provides a roadmap =
to guide operators in developing their 5G capabilities to optimize voice an=
d video calls and deliver a variety of new applications. These include 5G U=
HD video calls, intelligent translation, smart customer service, remote col=
laboration and content sharing.

With telecom operators in MEA collectively building the infrastructure and =
solutions necessary to make exciting 5G services and innovations possible f=
or consumers, businesses and industry, CMI will continue to work with partn=
ers across the region to help build an ecosystem for a smarter and more con=
nected future.

The independent regulatory body had agonised for months over whether it had=
 the legal authority to approve or reject a merger of two telecom operators=
, and the possible legal liability it could face depending on how it procee=
ded.

The telecoms regulator should move quickly ahead with such a consolidation =
plan if it's really under consideration, and could even consider such a pla=
n if it hasn't yet. Doing so would send a strong signal that the big state-=
run carriers could ultimately be demoted to simple network owners and opera=
tors. That would pave the way for a vibrant field of more entrepreneurial a=
nd innovative private companies to offer services under a series of reforms=
 now in the pilot program stages.



Telecom operators stand to benefit immensely by taking part in the metavers=
e. Through this virtual environment, they can enhance customer experience, =
monetize investments through adjacent services and increase operational eff=
iciency.

But more uniquely for telecom operators, the metaverse presents a distinct =
opportunity to play a more assertive role in the metaverse value chain. Alo=
ngside technology giants and online game developers, telecom operators can =
leverage emerging technologies such as 5G, edge cloud, analytics and artifi=
cial intelligence (AI) so that they are no longer relegated to the role of =
pipe provider but are paving the way to becoming cocreators of the metavers=
e. Indeed, we are already starting to see telcos around the globe recognize=
 this potential.

A wealth of product, customer and asset data will reside with telecom opera=
tors within the metaverse, while their legacy retail and distribution capab=
ilities will also provide a range of customer- and operations-related insig=
hts.

As we move into the metaverse, vast amounts of critical data will be proces=
sed. With enterprises and telecom operators coming together in new ways, it=
 is critical that both privacy and security are prioritized.

As operators chart the course to 5G and migrate to software-based, virtuali=
zed networks, their visibility and analytics infrastructure must follow sui=
t. This is where network packet brokers (NPBs) become critical. Many operat=
ors are choosing to have this technology in place just to handle the rising=
 traffic volumes leading up to 5G; those that do will be that much more rea=
dy for the next generation.
