The main reasons for stupid start-stop engine gimmicks was to make the 
car look better in terms of both mileage and emissions statistics. It 
is really a manufacturer's trick to get around laws brought in by 
various countries. Many different car manfacturers started putting the 
gimmick in.

In some cars you can turn it off permanently, in some cars it can be 
turned off only until you turn teh engine off manually (so have to 
reset it every journey), and in some cars it cannot be turned off at 
all ... and thankfully in some cars the silly gimmick isn't included in 
the first place.

The reality is that it is at best completely uselss and idiotic that is 
only marginally more law-abiding then simply faking teh emissions and 
mileage figures (as some car makes did do). It is definitely a highly 
annoying gimmick, especially in cars where it cannot be permantently 
turned off, and will cause extra wear and tear on the car's mechanical 
parts over time, even though the engine is warmed up. It should be 
banned, but currently the only option is to buy a car without this 
nonsense in it and then manufacturers might get the hint to stop 
putting it in ... although with petrol and diesel powered cars being 
forced out of production over the next few years, it's too late anyway.
