Lurching or surging with a 3.3L engine

Have any of you had Lurching or surging with a 3.3L engine?   especially
on acceleration from a stop.  It plows ahead, then power lessens some,
the it plows ahead, the maybe a second time power lessens.   What do you
call this?  

It's a 2005 Solara but any car could have it  Is it the engine?
transmission?  fuel?   Is it called lurching?  Surging? What?
