Here's the chronological and release order of The Mummy franchise and its s=
pin-off saga The Scorpion King. Universal scored a major success during its=
early days' thanks to its monster movies like 1931's Dracula, Frankenstein=
and The Invisible Man. This so-called Universal Classic Monsters franchise=
lasted all the way to the 1950s, with the Creature from the Black Lagoon a=
nd its sequels marking the original ending of the cycle. Many of these earl=
y films are still considered classics but attempts to revive the brand - su=
ch as 2010's The Wolfman or the "Dark Universe" - have often led to nothing=
.

Easily the biggest modern-day success for the Universal Monsters line-up wa=
s 1999's The Mummy. This was originally developed through the '90s as an R-=
rated horror movie with the likes of Clive Barker and George A. Romero deve=
loping it. Director Stephen Sommers' pitched a more blockbuster-friendly ta=
ke that blended horror with adventure. This fusion resulted in a surprise h=
it for Universal. Not only did it spawn two direct sequels, the cameo appea=
rance by WWE wrestler Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as the Scorpion King in The=
Mummy Returns saw the studio build a spin-off around his villain.

Johnson fronted The Scorpion King in 2002, marking his first leading role. =
The actor skipped out on its sequels, however, which all went straight to D=
VD. That means The Mummy and its spin-off Scorpion King saga comprises eigh=
t movies in total.

The first Scorpion King was rushed into production to capitalize on The Roc=
k's well-received - in terms of acting, not for the CGI monster he turns in=
to - turn in The Mummy Returns. While there were once plans to continue The=
Mummy saga beyond the third movie, that was scrapped in favor of the "Dark=
Universe" reboot The Mummy. That 2017 Tom Cruise blockbuster didn't click =
with viewers so future movies didn't happen. Even with this reboot taking t=
he series in another direction, The Scorpion King movies were still ongoing=
, running until 2018.

The Scorpion King 2 follows young Mathayus (Michael Copon), the character p=
layed by The Rock in the 2002 movie. When he witnesses his father's death a=
t the hands of the king (played by UFC Champ Randy Coutour), Mathayus's que=
st for vengeance transforms him into the most feared warrior of the ancient=
 world.

The heroic tale of young Mathayus and his relentless quest for justice agai=
nst an evil and powerful villain, King Sargon. Mathayus faces heart-stoppin=
g tribulations during his adventurous, odds-defying trajectory toward his u=
ltimate destiny: becoming the formidable warrior king of an ancient desert =
empire.

The Scorpion King collection is a spin-off to The Mummy Returns and follows=
the story of Mathayus and his rise to become the Scorpion King. The franch=
ise began with the 2002 film The Scorpion King, directed by Chuck Russell a=
nd starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Kelly Hu, Grant Heslov, and Michael =
Clarke Duncan.

It's the year 5000 BC - or thereabouts. The anachronistic Greek general Mem=
non is out to, you guessed it, take over the world, which consists of Afric=
an tribesmen, Amazons and the City of Gomorrah in improbably close conjunct=
ion. The leaders of the Free Peoples, including the chiefs of the aforesaid=
Africans and Amazons, hire the 'last of the Akkadians' a race of deadly as=
sassins, (which would come as a surprise to Sargon of Akkadia) to kill not =
Memnon, but the evil sorcerer whose magic and prophecies are the ultimate s=
ource of his success.

The film also spawned four direct-to-video prequels/sequels. The second fil=
m, subtitled Rise of a Warrior (2008), is a prequel showing how Mathayus be=
came the badass he is at the start of the first film, as well as his quest =
to avenge the deaths of his father and brother at the hands of the evil sor=
cerer-king Sargon. It also started off the sequels' tradition of having one=
Designated Girl Fight per film between the Action Girl female lead and a t=
oken Dark Action Girl.

The third film, subtitled Battle for Redemption (2012), is a straight seque=
l to the first film, revealing that Mathyus eventually fell from kinghood a=
fter a terrible tragedy and returned to his old life as a mercenary. Howeve=
r, his current mission to help a beautiful princess save her kingdom from t=
he evil warlord Talus offers him a chance for redemption for what he sees a=
s his past failings as a king.

The fourth film, subtitled Quest for Power (2015) appears to be set at an i=
ndeterminate point between the first and third films (i.e. after Mathayus l=
ost his throne but before the events of the third film), has Mathayus betra=
yed by his apprentice Drazen, a power-hungry prince who used him to steal a=
relic that could lead to unimaginable power. Mathayus now finds himself in=
a race against time to beat his former friend to the power he craves, aide=
d by the members of the royal family Drazen's father overthrew to become a =
king.

The pacing of the movie is a real issue. Within the first thirty minutes, M=
athayus fights in a pit, his dad dies, he trains, he gets a job, he betrays=
Sargon, his brother dies, he flees to another city, and finally he goes to=
Greece. This section spans six years worth of stuff. After the first thirt=
y minutes though, the movie slams to a halt in the Underworld. Making a poi=
nt they can only stay in the underworld for one hour, the next forty-five m=
inutes are spent there. Then the final thirty is reserved for the climax.

The saving grace of the movie is a character named Fong. They find Fong as =
a prisoner in Ancient Greece, not speaking any English. Fong has a real glo=
w up, going from being chained up about to be killed, to catching a flaming=
arrow out of the air and throwing it back at the man who shot it. Fong ste=
als the show, and while he may unfortunately be an Asian stereotype, he is =
the best character.

Once a warrior-for-hire who was the last of a dying people, the Akkadians, =
Mathayus became a mercenary, training extensively in the deadly arts and on=
ly serving those whom he and his brothers personally preferred. However, af=
ter his brothers died, Mathayus went on to end the reign of Memnon, a murde=
rous warlord who sought to conquer everything around him. He eventually ros=
e to become the Scorpion King, a warlord himself. Mathayus ascended to powe=
r after Memnon's death by assuming the role of king, becoming a formidable =
ruler in ancient Egypt before the Pyramid era.

Mathayus lived in the kingdom of Akkad in the city of Nippur as a child. He=
was the son of Ashur, a renown unrivaled Black Scorpion of his era. Ashur =
debarred Mathayus to serve the Black Scorpions. Mathayus disregarded his fa=
ther's remonstrance and took part in the Ancient Games to begin his trainin=
g. During the games, he extricated Layla from Sargon, the then commander of=
Akkadian Armies. Ashur came to the aid of his son leading to a confrontati=
on with Sargon. King Hammurabi on behalf of Ashur's services to Akkad, abri=
dged Ashur and Mathayus violation for dishonoring the commander and the gam=
es, and commanded Mathayus to serve the Black Scorpions and depart for trai=
ning. A few days prior to Mathayus's departure, Sargon excogitated Ahsur's =
death, through his occult and dark potency. Mathayus was enlightened that S=
argon conspired to his father's death and took an oath to become a fierce w=
arrior, to avenge his father's death. Mathayus travailed from dawn to dusk =
to become an unexcelled Black Scorpion amongst the others.

Mathayus awoke the next morning buried up to his head next to Arpid, the ho=
rse thief he had discovered the night before; Memnon had ordered them burie=
d up to their heads near fire ant colonies by guards who brought torches so=
the torch smoke put in the colonies would drive the ants out and they woul=
d slowly eat both Mathayus's and Arpid's heads slowly and painfully, a conc=
ept that Arpid explained to Mathayus laughingly because Arpid planned to es=
cape while leaving Mathayus to die as revenge for leaving Arpid himself to =
die earlier the night before. Arpid waited buried for one guard, who had be=
en drinking yak urine for an hour to get up and relieve himself; once the g=
uard got to his feet, Arpid knocked him out with an unburned torch as the o=
ther guard came out and was knocked aside as well directly into an anthill,=
where swarms of the angry ants covered him.

Mathayus watched as more ants from a nearby hill burst out closer and calle=
d for Arpid to get him out as well; Arpid bade Mathayus promise not to kill=
him and to allow the horse thief to accompany him on his journeys, sharing=
the spoils, for Mathayus, as an Akkadian, was bound to his word. Mathayus =
promised this and Arpid subsequently took a lit torch and a swig from the f=
lask that the guard had been drinking from to burn away the ants, spraying =
the fire with the fluid in front of the ants, charring some and driving oth=
ers to escape back into the hills, after which Arpid plucked a few of the r=
emaining ants from Mathayus' head.

Escaping, Mathayus encountered Philos again, and using Philos's invention o=
f the early catapult, he used it to escape, only to land at Memnon's harem =
quarter. The Harem distracted him, took all of his weapons, and alerted the=
guards. Mathayus had to escape again which fell into the bathing chamber o=
f Memnon's sorceress, Cassandra. He captured her and escape through the bat=
h's drain, emerging to a nearby well used by the people. Mathayus decided t=
o keep the sorceress alive, and using a knife to threaten her, they escaped=
the city that was locking down. Mathayus came to defeat Memnon and became =
the king. After Cassandra's death by infection, Mathayus' empire fell.

Mathayus called out to Anubis by remembering the text of the Book of the De=
ad, requesting his life back, as well as the chance to once again conquer h=
is foes, in exchange for what had been denied him: a golden pyramid. At tha=
t moment, a large black scorpion scuttled out of the sands and Mathayus pro=
mptly picked up the arthropod and chewed it up, ignoring its stings on his =
hand; the scorpion having been offered as confirmation by Anubis towards Ma=
thayus' request. With the eating of the scorpion, trees began to sprout fro=
m the sands, along with waters that flowed in rivers, and in minutes a grea=
t oasis had sprouted up from the deserts, where Mathayus recuperated his st=
rength before going on his goal to re-challenge Thebes.
