Not really answering your question, but I kinda like S5. Sure, S2,  3 and
4 are absolutely insanely awesome, and S1 is a better lead-in than it is
given credit for, but S5 isn't bad.

And to the extent it is sub-par it is not due to writing but rather due to
the fact that it ended up being bolted-on. Which was due to a series of bad
management decisions (from our point of view, anyway).

There are so many untold stories from this universe. Luckily there are a
handful of books that are canon, and I have read all three trilogies
several times: They fill in a *lot* of blanks in a very good way. I really
like them.
