Biden: Trump not just former president, he's a 'defeated former president'
By Brett Samuels - 01/06/22 09:38 AM EST

President Biden on Thursday sought to dismantle former President Trump's
repeated attempts to sow distrust in the 2020 election results, declaring
Trump a "defeated former president."

"Let’s speak plainly about what happened in 2020," Biden said in a speech
marking the anniversary of the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection.

"Even before the first ballot was cast, the former president was preemptively
sowing doubt about the election results," Biden said. "He built his lie over
months. It wasn’t based in any facts. He was just looking for an excuse, a
pretext to cover for the truth.

"He’s not just a former president. He’s a defeated former president," Biden
continued. "Defeated by a margin of over 7 million of your votes, and a full
and free and fair election. There is simply zero proof the election results
were inaccurate."

Biden spent much of his speech tearing into his predecessor for spreading
what he described as a "web of lies" about the 2020 election results, though
he did not refer to Trump by name. But the president pointed to the numerous
court rulings and election audits that have definitively shown his victory
was clear and legitimate last November.

Thursday marked one year since the Capitol insurrection, where multiple
people died and dozens of law enforcement officers were injured after a pro-
Trump mob stormed the complex to try to halt the certification of Biden's
electoral victory.

Trump spent months leading up to the 2020 election sowing doubt in its
reliability, and he has spent the year since he left office downplaying the
violence of Jan. 6 and claiming the election was somehow fraudulent.

Trump was initially scheduled to hold a news conference in Florida on
Thursday, but it was later canceled. Democrats in Washington have planned a
day's worth of events to mark the anniversary of the insurrection.
