Major sporting goods brand known for firearms, outdoor gear files bankruptcy

Big Rock Sports has joined the list of major sporting goods brands
struggling to stay afloat. 

And, according to The Street, Big Rock recently took the step of filing
for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. While some may not be familiar with the name,
Big Rock has some history to it, and at one point had a large catalog of
products that it distributed while specializing in firearms and firearm
accessories as well as fishing gear and other outdoor items. 

The Street noted that the retailer’s website is now down, but that when
operational it explained that the brand had over 200,000 product SKUs
“and services more than 20,000 fishing, shooting, camping, taxidermy and
marine retailers across the US, Canada, the Carribbean and eight other
countries.” 

The outlet reported that Big Rock’s website noted that its history goes
all the way back to the founding of All-Sports Supply, and that its
history dates back 71 years. 

The Street reported that Big Rock has already liquidated its Canadian
operations, and that the company currently has “$2.57 million in direct
borrowings and $17.7 million on guaranteed debt.” 

The sporting goods and outdoor retailer space has been difficult
sledding of late. 

Just last year, The Orvis Company, which has been in business for 169
years, announced it was planning to shutter 31 stores and five outlets. 

Orvis President Simon Perkins told Fox the move will begin a “new
chapter” for the business and will allow a “more focused retail store
portfolio.” 

Fox said that Orvis’ roots date back to 1856, and it has kept its
headquarters in Sunderland, Vermont during that time. The outlet said
that Orvis has more than 550 domestic independent dealers and several
national outdoor retailers. 

“Like many in retail, Orvis’ business model faced a sizable shift with
the introduction of an unprecedented tariff landscape,” Perkins told
Fox. 

He told Fox that in order for Orvis to “ensure a durable brand and model
for decades to come, we are focusing on our core strengths and making
the difficult but necessary decision to rescale the business by
tightening our assortment and reducing our corporate store footprint.”
