Psalm 4

Introduction

When troubles press hard on every side, we need a safe place to go. King 
David wrote this psalm when men came against him with lies and bad words 
(Psalm 4:2). In his dark hours, he called out to God, who had helped him 
in the past (Psalm 4:1). This song shows us that real peace does not 
come from easy circumstances. Real peace comes from the Lord, who hears 
us when we pray (Psalm 4:3). Jesus Christ had this same quiet trust when 
He prayed in the garden before the cross (Matthew 26:39). He took our 
place and died for us so we can go to God at any time.

Doctrine

God sets apart those who belong to Him through His Son (Psalm 4:3). The 
Lord hears His people when they cry out to Him (Psalm 4:1). God made a 
way for us to be righteous in His sight through the precious blood of 
Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:21). Salvation is a gift of God, not something we 
can earn by our own works (Ephesians 2:8-9). True joy comes from the 
Lord, and it is far greater than any earthly wealth or harvest (Psalm 
4:7). Jesus gives His people a peace that the world cannot give or take 
away (John 14:27).

Reproof

It is easy for us to seek satisfaction in things that do not last. The 
text warns us against loving vanity and seeking after lies (Psalm 4:2). 
We often fall into sin when we let anger rule our hearts instead of 
trusting God (Psalm 4:4). Pride leads us to trust in our own strength or 
in the praise of men rather than in the grace of God (Proverbs 3:5). 
When we turn away from the truth, we bring shame upon our testimony and 
hurt our walk with the Lord (1 John 2:15).

Correction

This passage calls us to turn away from sin and put our full trust in 
the Lord (Psalm 4:5). We avoid anger and foolish words by taking time to 
think on God in the quiet hours of the night (Psalm 4:4). Instead of 
seeking the world's favor, we look to the light of the Lord's face to 
shine upon us (Psalm 4:6). True righteousness comes when we repent of 
our sins and depend on the perfect work of Christ (Romans 5:1).

Instruction

The passage shows we implement this by coming to the Lord in prayer as 
soon as trouble comes (Psalm 4:1). We examine our own hearts before we 
sleep and stop speaking in anger (Psalm 4:4). We offer the sacrifices of 
praise and put our full trust in the Lord (Psalm 4:5). Each day, we ask 
God to guide our steps and fill our hearts with His joy (Psalm 4:7). We 
can rest and sleep in peace because the Lord alone makes us dwell in 
safety (Psalm 4:8).

Encouragement and Hope

We have great hope because God always keeps His promises to His children 
(2 Corinthians 1:20). Even in the darkest night, the Lord is near to 
those who trust in Him (Psalm 34:18). Jesus lay down His life for us and 
rose again so that we might have eternal life (1 Thessalonians 5:10). 
Because Christ overcame death, we can face every trial with peace in our 
hearts (John 16:33). God will keep us safe now and forever (Psalm 4:8).

Invitation

God loves you and wants you to have peace with Him (Romans 5:1). But our 
sins separate us from a holy God (Romans 3:23). The penalty for sin is 
death and separation from God in hell forever (Romans 6:23). Yet Jesus 
Christ took your place on the cross and paid your full debt (1 Peter 
2:24). He died, was buried, and rose again on the third day (1 
Corinthians 15:3-4). If you will turn from your sin and trust in Jesus 
as your Lord and Savior, He will forgive you and give you eternal life 
(Romans 10:9-13).
