Psalm 13: From Pain to Praise

Psalm 13 shows how David turned his deep sorrow into praise by trusting 
in the Lord's great love and salvation.


Introduction: The Cry of a Heavy Heart

The Christian life has days when the night seems long and dark. In Psalm 
13, David feels like God has turned His face away (Psalm 13:1). Pain 
fills his heart all day long while his foe seems to win (Psalm 13:2). 
Yet God put this song in the Bible to show us that we can bring our real 
grief to Him. On the cross, Jesus felt the full weight of our dark sin 
and cried out in pain for us (Matthew 27:46). Because He took our place, 
we know God will never leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5).

God Hears the Cry of His People

Our text shows that God wants His children to pray with open hearts when 
grief is deep (Psalm 13:1-2). He counts our tears and knows our pain 
(Psalm 56:8). The context indicates that David turns his eyes back to 
God when the enemy boasts (Psalm 13:2-3). When Christ died on the tree, 
the foe thought he had won the day (1 Corinthians 2:8). But God turned 
that dark hour into the ultimate win over sin and death for His church 
(Colossians 2:15).

Avoid the Trap of Doubt

We should avoid the lie that tells us God has left us for good when 
trials come (Psalm 13:1). It is easy to look at our foes and forget that 
God is in full control (Psalm 13:2). When we look at self instead of the 
Lord, our hearts fill with grief and fear (Psalm 13:2). Jesus took the 
dark weight of our guilt on Himself so we can look to Him and live 
(Isaiah 45:22; John 3:14-15).

Turning to the Light of God

Instead, this passage calls us to ask the Lord to give light to our eyes 
in the dark times (Psalm 13:3). David prays for life so he will not 
sleep in death (Psalm 13:3). The Lord gives light to our paths through 
His true Word (Psalm 119:105). Christ died and rose from the grave to 
give us true life that lasts for all time (1 Corinthians 15:3-4; John 
10:10).

      "But I have trusted in thy mercy; my heart shall rejoice in thy
       salvation. I will sing unto the LORD, because he hath dealt
       bountifully with me." (Psalm 13:5-6)


Steps to Walk in Faith

We do this by choosing to trust in the steadfast love of God even when 
we feel no joy (Psalm 13:5). The passage shows we implement this by 
fixing our eyes on the grace found in Christ (Hebrews 12:2). We pray, we 
trust, and we sing to the Lord for His rich good to us (Psalm 13:6). As 
the church, we gather to lift His name and remind each other of His 
cross (Ephesians 5:19).

Hope in the Lord's Goodness

Our Lord will never lose a single sheep that belongs to Him (John 
10:28-29). The night may be dark, but joy comes in the morning (Psalm 
30:5). Jesus will come back in the clouds for His bride before the great 
day of wrath on earth (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17; 1 Thessalonians 5:9). He 
will reign as King of kings on the earth for a thousand years 
(Revelation 20:4).

The Gift of Eternal Life

God demonstrated His love by sending His son to die for our sins while 
we were still enemies (John 3:16; Romans 5). All people have sinned and 
fall short of God's glory (Romans 3:23). The price for sin is death and 
eternal separation from God in hell (Romans 6:23; Revelation 20:14-15). 
But Jesus Christ, God's Son, came in the flesh (John 1:14). He lived a 
sinless life and took your place on the cross (2 Corinthians 5:21). He 
paid your full death debt with His own blood (1 Peter 2:24). He died, 
was buried, and rose again on the third day (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). If 
you put your trust in Jesus alone today, He will forgive your sins and 
give you everlasting life (Romans 10:9-10, 13).

Good News †

The crucifixion of Christ completely satisfied the debt of our sins 
toward God (Colossians 2:14), which God verified by bringing Him back to 
life (Romans 1:4). As a result, God is proven just when He forgives 
believers (Romans 3:26) and delivers them from the approaching wrath (1 
Thessalonians 1:10). Eternal salvation is a free gift appropriated by
