Psalm 15: Who Will Dwell With God?

Introduction

Psalm 15 asks a deep question about who can live with God on His holy 
hill (Psalm 15:1). Before looking at this psalm, we must be clear about 
how a person gets right with God. Scripture teaches that no one is made 
right with God by doing good works or keeping the law (Romans 3:20, 
Galatians 2:16). We are saved only by the grace of God through faith in 
Jesus Christ, apart from any works of our own (Ephesians 2:8-9, Titus 
3:5). Good works can never earn eternal life or fix our sin. However, 
Psalm 15 shows us how to discern who is already right with God! Good 
fruit and holy living show that a person has real spiritual life from 
God (James 2:18, 1 John 3:10). Works do not make us children of God, but 
they prove who the children of God are (1 John 2:29). Jesus lived this 
pure life for us (1 Peter 2:22), and now He gives us His life so we can 
walk in His steps (1 John 2:6).

      "LORD, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy
       holy hill? He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness,
       and speaketh the truth in his heart." (Psalm 15:1-2)


Doctrine

Our text shows that God is holy, and only those made clean can draw near 
to Him in sweet fellowship (Psalm 15:1, Psalm 24:3-4). The context 
indicates that Christ fulfilled all righteousness for us when He gave 
His life on the cross and rose from the dead (Romans 10:4, 2 Corinthians 
5:21). When a sinner trusts in Christ, God puts the righteousness of 
Jesus on that person's account (Romans 4:5). Because Christ lives in the 
believer, the Holy Spirit produces good fruit in daily life (Galatians 
5:22-23). The passage reveals that a true child of God walks in an 
upright way, works what is good, and speaks truth from the heart (Psalm 
15:2). This fruit is not how we gain life, but how real life in Christ 
shows itself to the world (1 John 3:18). By this fruit, believers can 
discern who belongs to the Lord (Matthew 7:20).

Reproof

We should avoid the trap of thinking that bare words or outward claims 
mean a person is truly saved (Matthew 7:21, Titus 1:16). This passage 
warns us against using the tongue to hurt others or spread gossip (Psalm 
15:3, James 3:8). The context cautions against loving the evil ways of 
the world or taking part in deceit and greedy schemes (Psalm 15:4-5, 1 
John 2:15). When a person claims to know Christ but continues to walk in 
darkness without care, Scripture shows that such a walk denies the truth 
of the gospel (1 John 1:6). We should guard against self-deceit and 
learn to discern truth from error by looking at the fruit of a person's 
walk (John 7:24, 1 John 4:1).

Correction

Instead of walking in darkness or trusting in our own deeds, this 
passage calls us to set our heart on God's truth (Psalm 15:2, Psalm 
119:11). When believers fall into sin, the biblical solution is to turn 
to Jesus in confession, knowing He cleanses us from all unrighteousness 
(1 John 1:9). This text calls us to put off the old way of life and put 
on the new man made in the image of God (Ephesians 4:22-24). The passage 
guides us to honor those who fear the Lord and turn away from what is 
vile (Psalm 15:4). Christ is our strength in this clean walk 
(Philippians 4:13). As we look to Jesus, He changes our heart so that we 
love our neighbor and keep our word, even when it costs us (Psalm 15:4, 
Romans 13:8).

Instruction

The passage shows we implement this path of godliness by feeding on the 
Word of God every day (Psalm 1:2, 2 Timothy 3:16-17). We do this by 
guarding our speech, speaking the truth in love, and putting away all 
slander (Psalm 15:2-3, Ephesians 4:25). We implement this walk by 
choosing companions who love the Lord and honoring those who follow Him 
(Psalm 15:4, Proverbs 13:20). We practice this by dealing fairly with 
money, helping those in need without taking unfair gain, and taking an 
uncompromising stand for what is right (Psalm 15:5, Micah 6:8). Through 
these practical steps, enabled by the Holy Spirit, we show that we are 
children of God walking as light in the world (John 13:35, Ephesians 5:8).

Encouragement and Hope

The psalm ends with a sweet promise for those who walk in the light: 
they shall never be moved (Psalm 15:5). Our place on God's holy hill is 
secure because Jesus Christ went there for us as our High Priest 
(Hebrews 6:19-20). He holds us fast by His power and grace (John 
10:28-29). When we walk in His ways, we enjoy deep peace and assurance 
in our daily life (Psalm 119:165, 1 John 3:21). We do not walk in our 
own strength, for the Lord stays near us and grounds us like a tree 
planted by rivers of water (Psalm 1:3). We can rest with full hope that 
He who began a good work in us will carry it on to completion until the 
day of Jesus Christ (Philippians 1:6).

Invitation

Do you know Jesus Christ as your own Savior? You can never make yourself 
good enough to stand before a holy God on your own (Romans 3:23, Isaiah 
64:6). Your good deeds cannot wash away your sin or earn a place in 
heaven (Titus 3:5). But God loved you so much that He sent His Son, 
Jesus Christ, to take your place (John 3:16, Romans 5:8). Jesus lived a 
clean, sinless life and died on the cross to pay your full death penalty 
for sin (1 Corinthians 15:3, 1 Peter 3:18). He shed His precious blood, 
was buried, and rose again from the dead on the third day (1 Corinthians 
15:4). If you will put your trust in Jesus alone today, He will forgive 
all your sins and give you eternal life (Acts 16:31, Romans 10:9, 
Ephesians 2:8-9). Turn to Him in faith right now and be saved!

Psalm 15 shows how good fruit reveals a heart made right with God by 
grace through faith in Jesus Christ.
