Psalm 17: What is the main point?

Psalm 17 begins with a bold appeal for God to hear a plea that comes 
from lips free of deceit. The psalmist asks the Lord to examine his 
heart, test him through the night, and vindicate his integrity, having 
resolved not to sin with his mouth and having walked strictly according 
to God’s word. In the face of aggressive, pitiless enemies who circle 
like predators seeking to tear their prey, the petition shifts to a plea 
for miraculous deliverance, asking God to shelter him as the apple of 
His eye and beneath the shadow of His wings. The psalm draws a clear 
division between worldly pursuers whose entire portion and satisfaction 
consist of temporal wealth and earthly inheritance, and the righteous 
servant whose ultimate hope is eternal: to behold God’s face in 
righteousness and to awake fully satisfied in His likeness.

When we consider the standard of pure righteousness set forth in this 
psalm, it points beyond any flawed human performance directly to Jesus 
Christ. He alone was tested to the uttermost and found entirely without 
sin or deceit. Yet Christ did not merely demonstrate personal 
perfection; He accomplished a great exchange on our behalf. Under the 
terms of the gospel, God took the sin of the ungodly and charged it to 
Christ’s account, while transferring Christ’s perfect, law-abiding 
righteousness to the account of the believer (2 Corinthians 5:21).

This imputed righteousness is the sole basis upon which God justifies 
and vindicates His people, completely removing all condemnation and 
answering every accusation of the enemy. Furthermore, as 1 John 2 
declares, when we fail, we have an Advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ 
the righteous—who continually pleads our cause based upon His 
propitiating sacrifice, which fully satisfied the wrath and justice of 
God. Christ does not merely serve as an example of righteousness; He is 
the source of our standing before the Father. It is this secure 
standing, being declared righteous solely by grace through faith in 
Christ’s finished atonement and ongoing intercession, that frees and 
motivates the believer to walk faithfully before Him in this life.

This reality establishes a radically different hope from that of the 
world. While the ungodly live entirely for this present age, finding 
their temporary reward in perishable earthly goods, the believer makes 
God Himself their portion. Because we are justified in Christ, our 
ultimate expectation transcends the grave: on the day of resurrection, 
we will awake in glory, stand fully accepted in His presence, and find 
our eternal and complete satisfaction in beholding His face.
