Psalm 17: You Should Take Refuge In Christ

Psalm 17

Psalm 17 shows how God protects His children and grants eternal hope 
through Jesus Christ, satisfying our souls when we see His face.

Introduction

David wrote this prayer when wicked enemies came against him (Psalm 
17:1-5). He cried out to the Lord because God hears His people and saves 
those who trust in Him (Psalm 17:6-7). This passage points us to the 
Lord Jesus Christ, who prayed to the Father in His time of grief and 
trusted Him completely (Matthew 26:39). Jesus faced evil men, died for 
our sins, and rose again to give us life (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). When we 
face trials, we can pray to God with confidence because we belong to 
Jesus (Hebrews 4:16).

Doctrine

Our text shows that God hears the prayer of those who are right with Him 
(Psalm 17:1). God tests the heart and finds no sin in His holy Son 
(Psalm 17:3, 1 Peter 2:22). The word of God keeps believers away from 
the paths of the destroyer (Psalm 17:4). God holds up our steps so our 
feet do not slip (Psalm 17:5). God shows His great love to those who 
trust in Him (Psalm 17:7). He keeps His people as the apple of His eye 
and hides them under the shadow of His wings (Psalm 17:8). This divine 
care is fully seen in Jesus Christ, who died and rose to make us safe 
forever (Romans 8:31-34).

Reproof

We should avoid relying on our own strength when troubles come (Psalm 
17:9-10, Proverbs 3:5). The passage warns against the proud heart that 
speaks with arrogance and sets its eyes on earthly wealth (Psalm 
17:10-14). Men of the world care only for this present life and fill 
their hands with things that pass away (Psalm 17:14, 1 John 2:15-17). It 
is wrong to seek happiness in earthly gain while ignoring the Lord who 
made us (Luke 12:15-21).

Correction

Instead, this passage calls us to set our minds on things above and rest 
in the Lord (Psalm 17:15, Colossians 3:1-2). When trials or enemies 
come, the biblical solution is to cry out to God in prayer (Psalm 17:6, 
Philippians 4:6). We are called to walk in God's paths and hold fast to 
His words (Psalm 17:4-5, John 15:10). We fix our eyes on Jesus, who 
endured the cross for us and gives us His righteousness (Hebrews 12:2, 2 
Corinthians 5:21).

Instruction

The passage shows we implement this by bringing every need to God in 
daily prayer (Psalm 17:1, 1 Thessalonians 5:17). We store up God's word 
in our hearts so we do not sin against Him (Psalm 17:4, Psalm 119:11). 
We ask the Lord to guide our steps each day through His word (Psalm 
17:5, Psalm 119:105). We look forward to the day we see His face in 
glory, living each hour in light of His return (Psalm 17:15, 1 John 3:2-3).

Encouragement and Hope

Believers have great hope because God guards them as the apple of His 
eye (Psalm 17:8). No enemy can snatch us out of His hand (John 
10:28-29). Though trials come in this life, a glorious day is coming 
when we will awake in the likeness of Jesus Christ (Psalm 17:15, 1 
Corinthians 15:51-52).

"As for me, I will see Your face in righteousness; I shall be
satisfied when I awake in Your likeness." (Psalm 17:15)


We will see His face and be satisfied forever in His presence (Psalm 
17:15, Revelation 22:4).

Invitation

You can know this peace and eternal hope today. We have all sinned 
against God and deserve the penalty of death (Romans 3:23, Romans 6:23). 
But God loves you so much that He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to die in 
your place (John 3:16, Romans 5:8). Jesus took your sin upon Himself on 
the cross and paid your full debt with His own blood (1 Peter 2:24, 
Ephesians 1:7). He died, was buried, and rose again from the dead on the 
third day (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). If you turn from your sin and trust in 
Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, God will forgive all your sins and 
give you eternal life (Acts 16:31, Romans 10:9-10). Trust in Jesus today 
and be saved.

Through the cross, Christ erased the spiritual debt we owed to God for 
our rebellion (Colossians 2:14), a reality established when God raised 
Him from the dead (Romans 1:4). God can now righteously pardon our sins 
(Romans 3:26) and exempt us from the coming divine judgment (1 
Thessalonians 1:10). Salvation cannot be earned; it is a free gift for
