Ezekiel 1

The Vision of the Lord's Glory

1 (Eze 11:24; Mt 3:16) In the thirtieth year, in the fourth month,
on the fifth day of the month, as I was among the captives
by the river of Kebar, the heavens were opened and I saw visions of God.
2 (Eze 8:1; 20:1) On the fifth day of the month, which was the fifth year
of the captivity of King Jehoiachin,
3 (2Ki 3:15; Eze 3:22) the word of the Lord came expressly to Ezekiel
the priest, the son of Buzi, in the land of the Chaldeans by the River Kebar.
And the hand of the Lord was on him there.
4 (Eze 1:27; 8:2) As I looked, a whirlwind came out of the north,
a great cloud with fire flashing forth continually, and a brightness
was all around it, and in its midst something as glowing metal
in the midst of the fire.
5 Also out of the midst came the likeness of four living creatures.
And this was their appearance: They had the likeness of a man.
6 (Eze 10:14) Every one had four faces, and every one had four wings.
7 (Rev 1:15; Da 10:6) Their legs were straight and the soles of their feet
were like the sole of a calf's hoof. And they gleamed like the color
of burnished bronze.
8 (Eze 10:21) They had the hands of a man under their wings on their 4 sides.
As for the faces and wings of the four of them,
9 (Eze 10:22) their wings were joined to one another. Their faces did not turn
when they went. Each went straight forward.
10 (Eze 10:14; Rev 4:7) As for the likeness of their faces, each had the face
of a man, and all four had the face of a lion on the right side, and the face
of an ox on the left side, and the face of an eagle.
11 (Isa 6:2; Eze 1:23) Thus were their faces. And their wings were stretched
upward. Two wings of every one were joined to one another, and two covered
their bodies.
12 (Eze 1:9) Each went straight forward. Wherever the spirit was to go,
they would go and not turn as they went.
13 (Ps 104:4; Rev 4:5) As for the likeness of the living creatures,
their appearance was like burning coals of fire and like the appearance
of lamps. It went up and down among the living creatures.
And the fire was bright, and out of the fire went forth lightning.
14 (Zec 4:10; Mt 24:27) The living creatures ran to and fro as the appearance
of a flash of lightning.
15 (Eze 10:9; 1:19-21) Now as I looked at the living creatures,
one wheel was on the ground by the living creatures
for each of the four faces.
16 (Da 10:6) The appearance of the wheels and their work was like the color
of sparkling beryl. And all four of them had one likeness.
And their appearance and their work was, as it were, a wheel in the middle
of a wheel.
17 (Eze 1:9; 1:12) Whenever they went, they went in any of their four sides
and did not turn as they went.
18 (Eze 10:12; Rev 4:6) As for their rims, they were so high that they were
dreadful. And the rims of all four of them were full of eyes all around.
19 (Eze 10:16) Whenever the living creatures went, the wheels went with them.
And whenever the living creatures were lifted up from the ground,
the wheels also were lifted up.
20 (Eze 1:12; 10:17) Wherever the spirit was about to go, they would go
in that direction. And the wheels rose close beside them.
For the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels.
21 (Eze 10:17; 1:19-20) Whenever those went, these went. And whenever those
stood still, these stood still. And whenever those rose from the ground,
the wheels rose close beside them. For the spirit of the living creatures
was in the wheels.
22 (Eze 10:1; 1:26) The likeness of the expanse over the heads of the living
creatures was as the awesome gleam of crystal, stretched out over their heads
above.
23 Under the expanse their wings were stretched out straight, the one toward
the other. Each one also had two wings which covered its body on the one side
and the other.
24 (Eze 43:2; Da 10:6) When they went, I heard the noise of their wings,
like the noise of abundant waters, as the voice of the Almighty,
the noise of tumult as the noise of an army camp. Whenever they stood still,
they let down their wings.
25 There was a voice from the expanse that was over their heads
whenever they stood still and let down their wings.
26 (Eze 10:1; Ex 24:10; Rev 1:13) Above the expanse that was over their heads
was the likeness of a throne, as the appearance of a sapphire stone.
And on the likeness of the throne was the likeness as the appearance of a man
on it high up.
27 (Eze 1:4; 8:2) Then I saw as glowing metal, as the appearance of fire all
around within it, from the appearance of His loins and upward;
and from the appearance of His loins and downward I saw as it were
the appearance of fire, and there was a brightness around Him.
28 (Eze 3:23; Rev 10:1; Eze 8:4) As the appearance of the rainbow that is in
the cloud on a day of rain,
so was the appearance of the brightness all around.
This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord.
And when I saw it, I fell on my face and heard a voice of one speaking.

Ezekiel 1
[1] Now it came to pass in the thirtieth year, in the fourth month, in the
fifth day of the month, as I was among the captives by the river of Chebar,
that the heavens were opened, and I saw visions of God.
[2] In the fifth day of the month, which was the fifth year of king
Jehoiachin's captivity,
[3] The word of the LORD came expressly unto Ezekiel the priest, the son of
Buzi, in the land of the Chaldeans by the river Chebar; and the hand of the
LORD was there upon him.
[4] And I looked, and, behold, a whirlwind came out of the north, a great
cloud, and a fire infolding itself, and a brightness was about it, and out
of the midst thereof as the colour of amber, out of the midst of the fire.
[5] Also out of the midst thereof came the likeness of four living
creatures. And this was their appearance; they had the likeness of a man.
[6] And every one had four faces, and every one had four wings.
[7] And their feet were straight feet; and the sole of their feet was like
the sole of a calf's foot: and they sparkled like the colour of burnished
brass.
[8] And they had the hands of a man under their wings on their four sides;
and they four had their faces and their wings.
[9] Their wings were joined one to another; they turned not when they went;
they went every one straight forward.
[10] As for the likeness of their faces, they four had the face of a man,
and the face of a lion, on the right side: and they four had the face of an

a beryl: and they four had one likeness: and their appearance and their work
was as it were a wheel in the middle of a wheel.
[17] When they went, they went upon their four sides: and they turned not
when they went.
[18] As for their rings, they were so high that they were dreadful; and
their rings were full of eyes round about them four.
[19] And when the living creatures went, the wheels went by them: and when
the living creatures were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up.
[20] Whithersoever the spirit was to go, they went, thither was their spirit
to go; and the wheels were lifted up over against them: for the spirit of
the living creature was in the wheels.
[21] When those went, these went; and when those stood, these stood; and
when those were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up over
against them: for the spirit of the living creature was in the wheels.
[22] And the likeness of the firmament upon the heads of the living creature
was as the colour of the terrible crystal, stretched forth over their heads
above.
[23] And under the firmament were their wings straight, the one toward the
other: every one had two, which covered on this side, and every one had
two, which covered on that side, their bodies.
[24] And when they went, I heard the noise of their wings, like the noise of
great waters, as the voice of the Almighty, the voice of speech, as the
noise of an host: when they stood, they let down their wings.
[25] And there was a voice from the firmament that was over their heads,
when they stood, and had let down their wings.
[26] And above the firmament that was over their heads was the likeness of a
throne, as the appearance of a sapphire stone: and upon the likeness of the
throne was the likeness as the appearance of a man above upon it.
[27] And I saw as the colour of amber, as the appearance of fire round about
within it, from the appearance of his loins even upward, and from the
appearance of his loins even downward, I saw as it were the appearance of
fire, and it had brightness round about.
[28] As the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud in the day of rain,
so was the appearance of the brightness round about. This was the appearance
of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. And when I saw it, I fell upon my
face, and I heard a voice of one that spake.

Ezekiel 2

The Call of Ezekiel

1 (Da 10:11; Eze 3:1) Then He said to me: Son of man, stand on your feet,
and I will speak to you!
2 (Eze 3:24; Da 8:18) When He spoke to me, the Spirit entered me
and set me on my feet. Then I heard Him speaking to me.
3 (Jer 3:25; 1Sa 8:7-8) And He said to me: Son of man, I send you
to the sons of Israel, to a rebellious nation that has rebelled against Me.
They and their fathers have transgressed against Me even to this very day.
4 (Eze 3:7; Ps 95:8) And as for the impudent and obstinate children,
I am sending you to them. And you shall say to them, "Thus says the Lord God."
5 (Eze 3:27; 33:33) As for them, whether they listen or not (for they are a
rebellious house), they shall know that there has been a prophet among them.
6 (Jer 1:8; Mic 7:4) And you, son of man, do not be afraid of them
or be afraid of their words, though briers and thorns be with you,
and you dwell among scorpions. Do not be afraid of their words
or be dismayed at their looks, for they are a rebellious house.
7 (Jer 1:7; Eze 3:10) You shall speak My words to them, whether they listen
or not, for they are rebellious.
8 (Rev 10:9; Isa 50:5) But you, son of man, hear what I say to you. Do not be
rebellious like that rebellious house. Open your mouth
and eat what I give you.
9 (Eze 8:3; 3:1) When I looked, a hand was sent to me. And a scroll was in it.
10 (Rev 8:13; Isa 3:11) And He spread it before me. And there was writing
on the inside and on the outside, and written on it were
words of lamentation and mourning and woe.

Ezekiel 2
[1] And he said unto me, Son of man, stand upon thy feet, and I will speak
unto thee.
[2] And the spirit entered into me when he spake unto me, and set me upon my
feet, that I heard him that spake unto me.
[3] And he said unto me, Son of man, I send thee to the children of Israel,
to a rebellious nation that hath rebelled against me: they and their fathers
have transgressed against me, even unto this very day.
[4] For they are impudent children and stiffhearted. I do send thee unto
them; and thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD.
[5] And they, whether they will hear, or whether they will forbear, (for
they are a rebellious house,) yet shall know that there hath been a prophet
among them.
[6] And thou, son of man, be not afraid of them, neither be afraid of their
words, though briers and thorns be with thee, and thou dost dwell among
scorpions: be not afraid of their words, nor be dismayed at their looks,
though they be a rebellious house.
[7] And thou shalt speak my words unto them, whether they will hear, or
whether they will forbear: for they are most rebellious.
[8] But thou, son of man, hear what I say unto thee; Be not thou rebellious
like that rebellious house: open thy mouth, and eat that I give thee.
[9] And when I looked, behold, an hand was sent unto me; and, lo, a roll of
a book was therein;
[10] And he spread it before me; and it was written within and without: and
there was written therein lamentations, and mourning, and woe.


Ezekiel 3:1-15

1 (Eze 2:8-9) Moreover He said to me, Son of man, eat what you find.
Eat this scroll and go speak to the house of Israel.
2 (Jer 25:17) So I opened my mouth, and He fed me this scroll.
3 (Ps 19:10; 119:103) He said to me, Son of man, feed your stomach
and fill your inward parts with this scroll that I give you.
Then I ate it, and it was as honey for sweetness in my mouth.
4 Then He said to me: Son of man, go to the house of Israel
and speak with My words to them.
5 (Jnh 1:2; Isa 33:19) For you are not being sent to a people
of foreign speech and hard language, but to the house of Israel,
6nor to many peoples of foreign speech and hard language, whose
words you cannot understand. But I have sent you to them who should
listen to you.
7 (Eze 2:4; 1Sa 8:7) But the house of Israel will not listen to you,
because they will not listen to Me. For all the house of Israel
is impudent and obstinate.
8 (Jer 1:18) But I have made your face as hard as their faces
and your forehead as hard as their foreheads.
9 (Isa 50:7; Eze 2:6) As emery harder than flint, I have made your forehead.
Do not be afraid of them or be dismayed at their looks,
though they are a rebellious house.
10 (Job 22:22; Eze 2:8) Moreover He said to me: Son of man, all My words
that I shall speak to you receive in your heart and hear with your ears.
11 (Eze 2:7; 2:5) Go to the captives, to the sons of your people,
and speak to them and tell them, whether they listen or not,
"Thus says the Lord God."
12 (Eze 8:3; Ac 8:39) Then the Spirit took me up, and I heard behind me
a great thundering voice: "­Blessed be the glory of the Lord in His place."
13 (Eze 1:24; 10:16-17) I heard also the noise of the wings of the living
creatures that touched one another and the noise of the wheels beside them,
even a great rushing sound.
14 (Eze 37:1; 2Ki 3:15) So the Spirit lifted me up and took me away,
and I went in bitterness, in the heat of my spirit, and the hand of the Lord
was strong upon me.
15 (Job 2:13; Ps 137:1) Then I came to the captives at Tel Aviv, who lived
by the River Kebar, and I sat there where they sat seven days,
causing consternation among them.

[1] Moreover he said unto me, Son of man, eat that thou findest; eat this
roll, and go speak unto the house of Israel.
[2] So I opened my mouth, and he caused me to eat that roll.
[3] And he said unto me, Son of man, cause thy belly to eat, and fill thy
bowels with this roll that I give thee. Then did I eat it; and it was in my
mouth as honey for sweetness.
[4] And he said unto me, Son of man, go, get thee unto the house of Israel,
and speak with my words unto them.
[5] For thou art not sent to a people of a strange speech and of an hard
language, but to the house of Israel;
[6] Not to many people of a strange speech and of an hard language, whose
words thou canst not understand. Surely, had I sent thee to them, they
would have hearkened unto thee.
[7] But the house of Israel will not hearken unto thee; for they will not
hearken unto me: for all the house of Israel are impudent and hardhearted.
[8] Behold, I have made thy face strong against their faces, and thy
forehead strong against their foreheads.
[9] As an adamant harder than flint have I made thy forehead: fear them not,
neither be dismayed at their looks, though they be a rebellious house.
[10] Moreover he said unto me, Son of man, all my words that I shall speak
unto thee receive in thine heart, and hear with thine ears.
[11] And go, get thee to them of the captivity, unto the children of thy
people, and speak unto them, and tell them, Thus saith the Lord GOD;
whether they will hear, or whether they will forbear.
[12] Then the spirit took me up, and I heard behind me a voice of a great
rushing, saying, Blessed be the glory of the LORD from his place.
[13] I heard also the noise of the wings of the living creatures that
touched one another, and the noise of the wheels over against them, and a
noise of a great rushing.
[14] So the spirit lifted me up, and took me away, and I went in bitterness,
in the heat of my spirit; but the hand of the LORD was strong upon me.
[15] Then I came to them of the captivity at Tel-abib, that dwelt by the
river of Chebar, and I sat where they sat, and remained there astonished
among them seven days.

Ezekiel, a Watchman for Israel

16 (Jer 42:7) At the end of seven days, the word of the Lord came to me,
saying,
17 (Isa 52:8; Jer 6:17) Son of man, I have made you a watchman
to the house of Israel. Whenever you hear the word from My mouth,
then warn them from Me.
18 (Eze 33:6; Ge 2:17; Eze 3:20) When I say to the wicked,
"You shall surely die," and you do not warn him,
nor speak to warn the wicked from his wicked way that he may live,
the same wicked man shall die in his iniquity,
but his blood I will require at your hand.
19 (Eze 14:14; 14:20) Yet if you warn the wicked and he does not
turn from his wickedness or from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity.
But you have delivered your soul.
20 (Eze 18:24; 3:18; Ps 125:5) Again, when a righteous man turns
from his righteousness and commits iniquity, and I lay a stumbling block
before him, he shall die. Because you have not given him warning,
he shall die in his sin, and his righteousness which he has done
shall not be remembered. But his blood I will require at your hand.
21 (Ac 20:31) Nevertheless if you warn the righteous man that the righteous
should not sin and he does not sin, he shall surely live
because he took warning. And you have delivered your soul.
22 (Ac 9:6; Eze 1:3) The hand of the Lord was upon me there,
and He said to me, Rise,
go out into the plain, and I will talk with you there.
23 (Eze 1:28; Ac 7:55) Then I arose, and went out into the plain.
And the glory
of the Lord stood there, as the glory which I saw by the river of Kebar,
and I fell on my face.
24 (Eze 2:2) Then the Spirit entered me, and set me on my feet,
and spoke with me and said to me: Go, shut yourself up within your house.
25 (Eze 4:8) As for you, son of man, they shall put bands on you
and shall bind you with them, so that you cannot go out among them.
26 (Eze 24:27) And I will make your tongue cleave to the roof of your mouth
so that you shall be mute and cannot be one to rebuke them,
for they are a rebellious house.
27 (Eze 24:27; 3:11) But when I speak with you, I will open your mouth,
and you shall say to them, "Thus says the Lord God." He who hears,
let him hear. And he who refuses, let him refuse.
For they are a rebellious house.

[16] And it came to pass at the end of seven days, that the word of the
LORD came unto me, saying,
[17] Son of man, I have made thee a watchman unto the house of Israel:
therefore hear the word at my mouth, and give them warning from me.
[18] When I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; and thou givest him
not warning, nor speakest to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save
his life; the same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will
I require at thine hand.
[19] Yet if thou warn the wicked, and he turn not from his wickedness, nor
from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered
thy soul.
[20] Again, When a righteous man doth turn from his righteousness, and
commit iniquity, and I lay a stumblingblock before him, he shall die:
because thou hast not given him warning, he shall die in his sin, and his
righteousness which he hath done shall not be remembered; but his blood will
I require at thine hand.
[21] Nevertheless if thou warn the righteous man, that the righteous sin
not, and he doth not sin, he shall surely live, because he is warned; also
thou hast delivered thy soul.
[22] And the hand of the LORD was there upon me; and he said unto me,
Arise,
go forth into the plain, and I will there talk with thee.
[23] Then I arose, and went forth into the plain: and, behold, the glory of
the LORD stood there, as the glory which I saw by the river of Chebar: and I
fell on my face.
[24] Then the spirit entered into me, and set me upon my feet, and spake
with me, and said unto me, Go, shut thyself within thine house.
[25] But thou, O son of man, behold, they shall put bands upon thee, and
shall bind thee with them, and thou shalt not go out among them:
[26] And I will make thy tongue cleave to the roof of thy mouth, that thou
shalt be dumb, and shalt not be to them a reprover: for they are a
rebellious house.
[27] But when I speak with thee, I will open thy mouth, and thou shalt say
unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; He that heareth, let him hear; and he
that forbeareth, let him forbear: for they are a rebellious house.

Ezekiel 4

The Siege of Jerusalem Portrayed

1 You also, son of man, take a brick and lay it before you and inscribe
a city on it, even Jerusalem.
2 (Eze 21:22) Then lay siege against it, and build a fort against it,
and build a mound against it; set camps and place battering rams
against it all around.
3 (Isa 8:18; 20:3) Moreover take for yourself an iron plate
and set it up for a wall of iron between you and the city.
And set your face against it so that it is besieged, and lay siege against it.
This shall be a sign to the house of Israel.
4 (Lev 16:22; 10:17) As for you, lie down on your left side
and lay the iniquity of the house of Israel upon it.
According to the number of the days that you lie on it,
you shall bear their iniquity.
5 For I have laid upon you the years of their iniquity according to the number
of the days, three hundred and ninety days. So you shall bear the iniquity
of the house of Israel.
6 (Nu 14:34; Da 9:24-26; 12:11-12) When you have accomplished them, lie again
on your right side, and you shall bear the iniquity
of the house of Judah forty days.
I have appointed you each day for a year.
7 (Isa 52:10) Therefore you shall set your face toward the siege of Jerusalem,
and your arm shall be uncovered, and you shall prophesy against it.
8 (Eze 3:25) I will lay bands upon you, and you shall not turn yourself from
one side to another until you have ended the days of your siege.
9 Also take for yourself wheat, and barley, and beans, and lentils,
and millet, and spelt, and put them in one vessel and make bread.
According to the number of the days that you lie on your side,
three hundred and ninety days, you shall eat it.
10 Your food which you shall eat shall be by weight, twenty shekels
[About 8 ounces, or 230 grams.] a day. From time to time you shall eat it.
11 You also shall drink water by measure, the sixth part of a hin.
[About 2/3 quart, or 0.6 liter]. From time to time you shall drink it.
12 You shall eat it as barley cake, having baked it in their sight with dung
that comes out of man.
13 (Da 1:8)Then the Lord said, "Even so the sons of Israel shall eat their
defiled bread among the nations where I drive them."
14 (Eze 9:8; 20:49) Then I said, "Ah, Lord God! My soul has not been defiled.
For from my youth up even until now I have not eaten of that which dies
of itself, or is torn in pieces, nor has abominable meat come into my mouth."
15 Then He said to me, "I have given you cow dung instead of man's dung
over which you shall prepare your bread."
16 (Lev 26:26; Eze 5:16) Moreover He said to me, Son of man, I will cut off
the supply of bread in Jerusalem. They shall eat bread by weight
and with anxiety and drink water by measure and with horror,
17 (Lev 26:39; Eze 24:23) because bread and water will be scarce,
and they will be appalled with one another, and waste away for their iniquity.

Ezekiel 4
[1] Thou also, son of man, take thee a tile, and lay it before thee, and
pourtray upon it the city, even Jerusalem:
[2] And lay siege against it, and build a fort against it, and cast a mount
against it; set the camp also against it, and set battering rams against it
round about.
[3] Moreover take thou unto thee an iron pan, and set it for a wall of iron
between thee and the city: and set thy face against it, and it shall be
besieged, and thou shalt lay siege against it. This shall be a sign to the
house of Israel.
[4] Lie thou also upon thy left side, and lay the iniquity of the house of
Israel upon it: according to the number of the days that thou shalt lie upon
it thou shalt bear their iniquity.
[5] For I have laid upon thee the years of their iniquity, according to the
number of the days, three hundred and ninety days: so shalt thou bear the
iniquity of the house of Israel.
[6] And when thou hast accomplished them, lie again on thy right side, and
thou shalt bear the iniquity of the house of Judah forty days: I have
appointed thee each day for a year.
[7] Therefore thou shalt set thy face toward the siege of Jerusalem, and
thine arm shall be uncovered, and thou shalt prophesy against it.
[8] And, behold, I will lay bands upon thee, and thou shalt not turn thee
from one side to another, till thou hast ended the days of thy siege.
[9] Take thou also unto thee wheat, and barley, and beans, and lentiles, and
millet, and fitches, and put them in one vessel, and make thee bread
thereof, according to the number of the days that thou shalt lie upon thy
side, three hundred and ninety days shalt thou eat thereof.
[10] And thy meat which thou shalt eat shall be by weight, twenty shekels a
day: from time to time shalt thou eat it.
[11] Thou shalt drink also water by measure, the sixth part of an hin: from
time to time shalt thou drink.
[12] And thou shalt eat it as barley cakes, and thou shalt bake it with dung
that cometh out of man, in their sight.
[13] And the LORD said, Even thus shall the children of Israel eat their
defiled bread among the Gentiles, whither I will drive them.
[14] Then said I, Ah Lord GOD! behold, my soul hath not been polluted: for
from my youth up even till now have I not eaten of that which dieth of
itself, or is torn in pieces; neither came there abominable flesh into my
mouth.
[15] Then he said unto me, Lo, I have given thee cow's dung for man's dung,
and thou shalt prepare thy bread therewith.
[16] Moreover he said unto me, Son of man, behold, I will break the staff of
bread in Jerusalem: and they shall eat bread by weight, and with care; and
they shall drink water by measure, and with astonishment:
[17] That they may want bread and water, and be astonied one with another,
and consume away for their iniquity.

Matthew 5:13-16

Salt and Light

13 (Lev 2:13; Lk 14:34-35) "You are the salt of the earth.
But if the salt loses its saltiness, how shall it be made salty?
It is from then on good

In the dimly lit restaurant, our waitress quietly took our orders with a 
solemn expression. But then a customer kindly gave her a writing pen that had 
a little flashlight built into it. He told her it was 
so she could "see in the dark."

Her face lit up, and her demeanor changed to reflect joy. It was evident that 
she was delighted by the gift - clicking the light off and on. When she left 
our table, the man smiled as he whispered to me, 
"I think she brightened up when I gave her the pen. It made her day!"

The God-given gift of light certainly brightens our days. Jesus is the 
ultimate gift of light - "light . . . come into the world" to save the world 
(John 3:16-19). God provided this gift because He loves us and wants to be in 
relationship with us. When we receive Christ as our Savior, our sins are 
forgiven, and we experience fellowship with Him. Jesus brightens our lives for
all eternity. He said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will 
never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life" (8:12).

As believers in Jesus, we're "the light of the world" (Matthew 5:14). When we 
receive the gift God gave us through Christ, we can walk in His light and 
"let [our] light shine before others" (v. 16). With Him as our source, 
let's shine for Him today!

Week 1 Knowing God's Word Day 5 - Learning by Heart

Ps 119:9,11

9 (Ps 38:6; 18:2) How shall a young man keep his way pure?
By keeping it according to Your word.
11 (Ps 42:5; 43:5) Your word I have hidden in my heart,
that I might not sin against You.

9 Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way?
By taking heed thereto according to thy word.
11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart,
That I might not sin against thee.

"His heart is not just in it," a gifted musician commented about the
pianist onstage. "He's here at the Orchestra Hall, playing for
thousands of people, an his technique is flawless, but something
is missing - his heart is just not in it."
The psalmist , in Psalm 119, draws a similar parallel. We "Keep our
way pure" through obedience of his Word, by ordering our lives according
to the commands of the Scriptures. But outward behaviour is not the only
essential factor in purity of life. The changes in our behaviour need to
come from the heart, from the inside out. Our "technique" for living
the Christian life may be flawless, but our obedience is founded
in heart motivation, something is certainly missing.
"I seek you with all my heart," the psalmist declares in verse 10.
Thus he can say in verse 11, "Your word I have hidden in my heart,
that I might not sin against You."
Often we refer to memorisation as "learning by heart" - and indeed
"by heart" is the biblical mandate for assimilating God's truth
into our daily lives. "By rote" or "By Mind" leaves us
intellectually overstuffed, yet spiritually starving.
When we try to apply the Word outwardly to our behaviour,
we end up in a tangle of legalism, a log "do list" by which
we hope to please God. But when we set our hearts toward God first,
then changes in our behaviour grow out of love for God and a deep
desire to serve him. Then we are truly loving and obeying God with
our whole hearts.

Application

a) In what ways have I tried to apply God's word to my behaviour
without having the truth firmly in my heart? What was the result?

b) How can I set my heart toward God and give myself more fully
to his Word?

c) What areas of my life need "purifying"? How can these verses
help me to "make my way pure"?

Moncton, followed by Fredericton and Saint John, each have a growing Muslim
population in New Brunswick, In 2007, the building that was formerly a Baptist
church was converted into Moncton's 1st mosque. The University of Moncton
also has a Muslim student association hosting prayer services, fellowship
getherings, and outreaches on campus.
Fredericton also has one mosque and a Muslim student association serving the
campuses of the University of New Brunswick and St. Thomas University.
Fredericton's Muslim population consists in 2014 of about 50 families,
and between 300 to 400 university students.
Saint John is home to the 1st Muslim Association for the province,
which also helped foster the Islamic associations of Fredericton and Moncton.
a 'musalla', or prayer location that is not officially structured as a mosque,
has been established in the Uptown area with the intention of seeing it grow
into a 2nd official place of Muslim worship. Demand for this new location has
been primarily for university students moving into the area.

Pray for Muslims and New Brunswick
- that the eyes of pastors, believers and entire congregations will be opened
to see this growing body of Muslims, and their hearts will be opened
to sharing God's love in Jesus Christ with them

- that intentional ministries to Muslims will grow and flourish in these

When the new moon is sighted it marks the beginning of t he new Islamic month
and Eid al-Fitr, the "Festival of Breaking the Fast", will start! After 30 days
of fasting, the Eid celebration at the end of Ramadan is a joyful time that
usually lasts about 3 days. Muslims will buy new clothes, exchange gifts and,
of course, enjoy special foods. In Muslim-majority nations, the streets may be
decorated and festivals will be held.
For many Muslims, Eid-al-Fitr begins with communal prayers at daybreak and the
distribution of money (zakat) to the poor, which is one of the 5 pillars of
Islam.
You can greet Muslim friends during this time by saying "Eid Mubarak",
which means Blessed Eid!"
Ramadan is over for this year, but you can continue to pray for Muslims you
know, and Muslims around the world:
- Despite the unsettling developments in our world today that involve actions
in the name of Islam, there is at the same time a largely untold story about
unprecedented movement to Christ among Muslims. There have been more such
movements of thousands or more new disciples among Muslims in the last three
decades or so than in all the previous history of Christian Muslim
relationships! Pray for this momentum to continue.

Acts 2:12-17 : 17 12 They were all amazed and perplexed, saying to each other,
"What does this mean?"
13 (1Co 14:23) Others mocking said, "These men are full of new wine."

I struggled with depression, brokenness, and addiction to
