Psalm 22: Forsaken to Fortress

Psalm 22

Psalm 22 stands as one of the most stunning prophecies in all of 
Scripture, laying out a vivid blueprint of how Jesus Christ was 
alienated, cursed, and raised from the dead specifically for our sins. 
When we look at the depths of what He endured, it becomes clear that you 
should take refuge in Christ as your Savior.

Because He bore your curse (Psalm 22:6–18)

Psalm 22 gives us a hauntingly precise picture of physical agony, 
mocking crowds, and pierced hands and feet—a scene fulfilled down to the 
last detail at the cross. This suffering was not a tragic mistake; it 
was the exact punishment our sins demanded. He was bruised for our 
iniquities and crushed for our transgressions, absorbing the full weight 
of divine judgment. We should take refuge in Christ because He stood in 
our place and bore the curse we deserved.

Because He rose from the dead (Psalm 22:19–31)

Thankfully, the psalm does not end in despair. Just as the second half 
of Psalm 22 dramatically pivots from agonizing suffering to triumphant 
global praise, Christ rose from the dead. His resurrection proved that 
His sacrifice was fully accepted, shattering the power of sin and death 
once and for all, and opening the door for anyone to turn to Him in worship.

Invitation

Just as Psalm 22 moves from the darkness of the cross to the global 
declaration of God's saving grace, the story of redemption calls out 
directly to you. The core of this good news is precisely what the 
Scriptures proclaim: Christ died for our sins according to the 
Scriptures, that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day 
according to the Scriptures (1 Corinthians 15:1–4). He took the 
alienation and the curse you deserved so that you wouldn't have to bear 
them. Right now, turn to Christ for salvation. Take refuge in His 
atonement for your sins. Show your faith by calling on the name of the 
Lord for to save you. Then rejoice in the salvation He offers, and 
proclaim Him to the world.

Through the cross, Christ erased the spiritual debt we owed to God for 
our rebellion (Colossians 2:14), a reality established when God raised 
Him from the dead (Romans 1:4). God can now righteously pardon our sins 
(Romans 3:26) and exempt us from the coming divine judgment (1 
Thessalonians 1:10). Salvation cannot be earned; it is a free gift for
